Rear Hub Wear

Hi There,

Am in the process of restoring my S3 LI150 - just removed the rear hub as part of the engine strip down.

Please can you advise, what the tolerance is for the thickness of the drum facing that engages with the brake shoes? mine does not look adversely thin, with no scoring but wanted to make sure it is within limits.

I cannot find anything in the Haynes manual - any advice is appreciated.

Hi Darren
What makes you think you may have adverse wear?
Do you have a step in the Drum where the brake shoes have been coming into contact, thus giving a large step at rim.
Such an indication will normally define the if drum needs replacing.

Hi There Jono,

Thanks for the reply - there is a step down which I would say is about half of the original thickness of the material - On reflection, I am mindful to replace as will be putting new shoes in (old ones look almost new but are contaminated with oil).

That sounds worn to me and without seeing, from description I would replace complete with brake shoes.

SIL hubs from Restos are decent and good value.

I once bought a SIL hub from SR. While it may have been strong it looked as if the spline had been peaned in with a bloody great chisel. Really crude stuff that put me off a bit.

There's probably little difference in the cost of a new hub compared to having the old skimmed by a reputable machinist anyway.
