series 2 150cc problem.

Bought a project with a series 2 engine in it which had a sheared cush drive bolt. I replaced it and after shimming the gearbox, reassembled the motor. Fitted a 12 volt conversion. Trying to start it the following happens. With the spark plug fitted the engine turns over once or twice then the flywheel freewheels. Take the plug out and the engine turns over fine. Sort of thought it might be a clutch problem but it has freeplay so i'm not sure. Has anybody got any sensible suggestions please? This has me completely stumped. Cheers.

Have you fitted the new cush drive bolt and tightened it correctly?
Sounds like the splines aren't aligned.

It also sounds as if the flywheel woodruff key may have sheared.

Thanks for the advice. I have stripped and reassembled everything including the cush gear. Absolutely on splines but engine has the same problem. Could there be excessive wear on the cush gears? When i said the flywheel 'free wheels' i mean that all compression disappears and the flywheel remains almost stationary.

In that case it could be the clutch,it sounds like your clutch cable could be to tight.Disconnect your clutch cable from the clutch arm on top of the engine and try it kicking it again.

That was a thought at the start, but after reassembling this time, i left the clutch cable off. it does feel like a badly adjusted clutch but with the cable not connected, it cant be.
Kicking it over i get 2 good compressions then it slips.

Are your clutch corks worn.They should fit(only just)between the jaws of an open ended 14mm spanner.

I am going to replace the clutch and see if that cures it. Wont be for a few days as i'm off on my hols.
