More problems with this "rebuilt" project engine. Started it up after loads of work on clutch and gearbox it smelt of burning oil and was smokey which you would expect from an engine that has sat since gawd knows when. It ran for a short time then stalled. i noticed spots of oil on the ground under the exhaust/silencer joint. The engine tried to restart but wouldn't fire up. Pulled off the silencer and a qty of oil ran out of the exhaust manifold. This suggests crankshaft seals (?). There is no dish on the gearbox side casing for an oil thrower so i guess the series 2 didnt have one (?). Any pointers please?

Whilst series one engines did not have dished oil throwers, there is some evidence that a few series two engines were sans oil throwers.

You are probably right about the oil seals. Any engine that has stood for that long must risk seal failure.

A couple of questions. When it was running, was the smoke very white? What is the plug like?

Can I fit a dished washer on a series one engine?

The engine casing i have looks identical to this photo. I was told it was a series 2.???

It could be an early S2,mine is S1,
unfortunately,when I was stripping,
I didn't think to test if I could fit an oil thrower washer

In my experience, the oil thrower makes very little if any any difference at all.
Just make sure the gearbox filler breather is ok.

Thanks for all replies. I have just dug the crankshaft out and found the gearbox seal carrier screws loose. That would do it then! Think a monkey must have rebuilt this. New seal and gaskets then hopefully, problem sorted.
