TV2 175 rebuild

Postby Stevepshipley » Thu Mar 07, 2019 8:07 pm

Bit of a head gasket question..........again

rebuilding an original TV2 175 engine, squish prior to rebuild was 1.8mm with a .75mm gasket. I wold prefer not to use a gasket but that would make squish too tight. Is it ok to use say a o.5mm gasket and reduce squish to 1.45mm or should I stick with original spec?

Or am I just being pedantic?

cheers steve

Unless you're using shit bearings, 1.05mm is ok. Or use a thicker base gasket/packer to get to 1.2 or 1.5mm.

Better to eliminate the head gasket.

well indeed Martyn..... which is why I'm fussing about. 1.8mm was the squish before I broke it so maybe it should just rebuild as it was.
don't like using headgaskets tho..........

As the subject of head gaskets was discussed very recently, it would be worth checking it out, as regardless of whether the squish is obtained by eliminating the head gasket or taking the risk of how long they last before leaking, ;) most owner/riders/engine builders realise the importance of the squish, however 'tight' they dare go. If the crank bearings (mag side, drive side & both conrod bearings) are sound, 1.0 mm is a good, safe minimum. One top tuner used to build championship winning engines with a squish as little as 0.07 mm :
