From 16 to 50.. I had scooters.. Gave up at 50...and at 51..needed just 1 back in my shed.. So bought one.. Off a lad who sells a few decent spec lammies on ebay( but doesn't take the cash though ebay) . About 6 hours drive from me in scotland.. Anyway.. Gets round to changing the oil.. And some chain roller bits fall out.. Its a shit chain.. The cheapest.. I message him.. He's no interested... So.. I'm changing the chain.. Its less than 500 miles on this rt195.. Fancy crank blah blah.. Whilst I change the chain.. Anything else I can do myself. Which is simple to do... What should I look out for wear n tear when the chain is off.. Cheers Steve..

Under the circumstances I think it may be prudent to strip the whole lot and have a look at what he’s used, I mean there was a guy on Facebook who stripped his new Targa twin only to find it full of indian shit as he put it and on top of the silly money he’d already spent had to spend considerable more to go through it and put right.

Can you be certain it’s an RT? Maybe it’s a cheap alloy eBay kit he’s trying to palm off as one

It's a shame that the profit motive of even respected dealers means that they sell brand new inferior chain. The particular one that I have had experience of is Rolon, which I take out of any engines & replace.

Since 1973 I have not experienced any problems with OEM chain or any manufactured by genuine European/Japanese dealers that has not been down to other issues, notably in a full race engine. I wouldn't expect to, as the same duplex 3/8" stuff is used in industry, in cars & motorcycles.

However, you will tend to find those that advocate Iwis chain above all others, so beware of that.

By all means save yourself your hard earned cash by shopping with Industrial Power Transmission suppliers & cut through the Bullsh1t mentality that surrounds 'our' chain by checking the technical specifications (on line) for the likes of Iwis, Regina, Renold, TDCross & Morse prior to purchase. If anybody can actually prove the significant superiority of one particular chain, I would be glad to be enlightened.

If it were me, I would avoid the brands not renowned for chain, even though they may be suitable. Examples include a famous tyre manufacturer.....

(I hesitate to say it, as I've been ripped off in the past by slackers on this Forum because I cannot turn a blind eye to safety issues such as wheel stud threads stripped, front brake lever pivot points broken, fraying front brake cables, mismounted front ends etc, but if you get really stuck, I can supply any chain length, riveted or linked to suit)

It's easy enough to ascertain whether it's a RT kit, the cylinder head has 8 nuts....
