Casa 185

Postby Pip110 » Thu May 07, 2020 2:39 pm

I have been told to run my Casa 185 which has only done 250 miles since fitted on a 4% mix is this right as it's quite smokey.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I would have thought 3% fully synthetic is more than enough when you say you were "told" was it by the supplier of the kit or builder of the engine? if neither I would say that's old thinking I run a Chiselspeed tuned rapido 250 and a mugelo 186 on 3% with no issues

Sounds like a case of arse covering exercise, 4% if using plain oul mineral oil but very few actually use it. 3% on semi and if ur brave 2% on fully synthetic ;)
Everyone has their own take of oil percentage 8-)

Four percent is overkill. I only ever run three on everything.

I was recommended to run on 4% when I had my engine rebuilt with a Casa 185 kit. I have done this from day one and had 5000 miles trouble free.
The engine was built by a highly recommended and trusted scooter guy. as above mine is smokey on start up but clears once on the move.

Each to their own but if the guy who built the motor ( assuming you trust him) told you to use 4% and you’ve only done 250 miles then I would do as he says. If you have any top end or crank issues with it You won’t have any come back if he knows you have ignored his instructions. I run both my steel lined TS1 and my ceramic lined 283 motor at 4%.

I advocate and advise 4% in all my motors despite what experts, oil companies and websites say, that big end needs lubing, in building crankshafts on a regular basis I see only to much the unwanted affects of not using the correct ratio's I'm sure someone will be along shortly to put the 3% case forward, if it works, it works, had to much success in both competition and road wise to change now, if the person building it knows what they're doing and giving you advice its always worth while to take note, if its smoking its more likely to be down to another issue or the type of oil being used, good luck and enjoy.

Irrespective of what oil you chose to use, the 4% rule should always apply in my opinion. Synthetic oils were developed to meet environmental concerns. They were never designed to allow your engine to use less especially on old air cooled engines that struggle to cool properly anyway.
A properly set up engine running at 4% should not be smokey after it has warmed up.
Smokey engines usually indicate incorrect carburation, leaky oil seal, iffy halite washer, twisted crank webs or a worn drive side bearing.

I think it's hard to generalise on oil ratios. For once  I will not comment on what has already been said. Apart from:

Is a scoop air cooled Group Four race engine on full chat under any more duress than a rally going scooter slogging up hill, two up, loaded with camping gear? It is debatable, but I will not reveal the ratio we used for racing here, but we had no issues with big ends as recently as 2015. Also, I don't believe that leaner ratios mean more power. I'm happy with what I use in road tuned engines & had to experiment because of over-oiling issues :?

Perhaps there are some virtues to riding as if you stole it

Just out of interest what carb settings and exhaust are you using?
