Engine water

Hi all, recently brought a project scooter, anyway now I've stripped it all down I thought I'd have a go at the engine, so I drained the oil first and just rusty water came out..

Here are some pics once I took the casing off, not pretty, cant understand how it got like this, particularly as to my knowledge it's been stored in my garage a year and yet it's still wet..

Was it a runner when you aquired it? Rust and corrosion like that suggest months or years of wet storage I would think

Probably hasn't done much damage to the casing, but the hardened surfaces on gears may well have suffered.

No it wasnt running, but hopefully it will be soon, I'm not overly fussed, I have a new 198 kit and new 150 gearbox for it. My main concern was how it got in, dont want it happening again once rebuilt..

The breather, perished seals on clutch or gear shafts?

That doesn't sound to bad then, I'm obviously replacing all the bearings and seals as part of the rebuild.

wouldnt worry too much - if you rebuild right it will be fine

i'd get it vapor blasted - will come up like new. If there is any structural damage (cracks etc) they will be more easily visable

Just remove most of the muck with a degreasant first before taking to the vapour blasters.
Vapour blasting is worth every penny, which you will appreciate so much when putting it all back together.

Thanks both, I intend to get it vapour blasted, had one done a few years back, as you say F&F, worth every penny.

Vapour blasting seems to make the casing porous in my experience. Best to just give a good clean up with gunk imo or get it blasted with something less harsh.
