Five plate clutch plate options

Postby Knowledge » Tue Sep 15, 2020 4:34 pm

I have a 5 plate Surflex clutch in my 6plate clutch (a variety of different steels + one standard cork plate) but i need to think about replacing the corks following a day on the dyno.

A new Surflex 5plate is about £60, but I don’t need the steels or the springs that come in the pack.

Do Surflex do the corks on their own (I can’t find any for sale) or could I substitute the Surflex cork plates with BGM items (which are available as a set of five corks)?

Has anyone had any experience of BGM plates?

Martin
AF used to sell the thinner green surflex plates seperate, not sure if they still do.
They were for 5 plate clutches.

CamLam list the green Surflex race variety, but presumably the cost is prohibitive. IMO they are good, specifically enabling six plates to fit, but if only scootRS were still available, I would go for that cheaper option.

CamLam also list various "corks only" kits, just in case you weren't aware.

Thanks to DSCScotty I use 5 standard surflex plates in my S1clutch.
I buy a pack of four and an extra pack when needed to top up.

Thanks WT1 for the lead on Cam Lam.

Steve, are Darren’s corks the standard thickness? I have been using the thinner corks from the five plate clutches and it is a lovely clutch, so I don’t want to upset the apple cart.

Perhaps Scotty will be along in a while with his contribution.

Thanks all so far.

Yes 5 standard surflex plates with thinner steels, using a modified Scootrs clutch set up.
But you're right that Scotty will be able to tell you more

they were great little clutch set ups, still a few in my own and clubmates motors, at the time, about 20 yrs ago, lol there was no decent 5 plate clutches so we developed our own, and found with a little thought and mods we could use 5 standard thickness plates and lighter springs which could cope with higher output and touring engines.

Readspeed sell thinner multiplayer corks in sets and/or individually various thicknesses available. I've used these in a number of clutches and they have functioned very well.

Thanks Adam.

It is a shame that you can’t buy the Surflex cork plates from their 5 plate clutch without having to buy the whole kit. Cork plates do wear out, but the steels and spring should anticipate a much longer life.
