Split wheel rims recommendation please

Postby al pushpak » Sun May 16, 2021 9:22 am

Hi, as above can anyone recommend decent split rims that don't start to rust & end up with flakey paint after 2 months & haven't got studs made of cheese! thanks for any feedback :)

I always rated genuine SIL rims, but as they came in primer they always had to be finished. I still have a couple new slight seconds ones, that will powder coat when needed.

I recently needed some chrome rims and used Scootopia ones to get chromed, the SIL I had had a couple of ripples in the pressing so weren't good enough for chrome #

I can't vouch for the longevity of the paint, but everything else was good ( 2 half matched, studs decent, steel thickness/quality etc) and the finish appeared decent.

# counter to that was I first tried BGM show chrome rims.... To quote Paul Calf.. " bag of shite"

If I wanted off the shelf paint finished rims I would use Scootopia again.

Got some MEC Ali ones on the shelf I'm going to try on next tyre change

Hi Gaz, thanks for your reply & info, I'm currently running BGM ones & while the overall finish is good the studs aren't the greatest & the paint soon started to flake, also had scootopia ones & had an issue with valve hole positioning! might give the SIL ones a go ,I will need to paint them so not fussed about the finish. thanks again :)

Only problem with SIL is getting them now. SR only have seconds, last time I spoke to them they said they were down to very poor ones now.

What about FA Italia, their stuff is generally pretty good?
As you've tried BGM and Scootopia, might be worth a try

I've just got a pair for a vespa small frame I'm doing and the quality is good (they will be powder coated)

Best on the market bar none is the bgm stainless steel variant but at a cost, FA Italian are not bad for the price but I’d check them for roundness ( warped) before fitting ur hoop ;)

I was pleased with the Scootopia ones I had chromed, they fitted easy with Scootsmart.

A very nice fit was powder coated SIL rims, Mypol tubes and SIP Performer (not Performance) tyres.
Fitted before lockdown last year so untested as yet!

I really like the alloy split rims. They are light and sturdy. They also retain their satin/gloss finish. They do not look like original rims though although I suppose there is nothing to stop you painting them.

Well the imola rim turned up :? made by Mecur so nothing special about them, tiny bit of unevenness but nothing too worry about. The all alloy rim is impressive( very light) and again a tiny bit of unevenness. Just debating on shall it be a front or rear fitment

I've got 3pr of the MEC Ali splits, they look decent. Just not got round to fitting them up or on anything...

It's on the later base....
