Putting into first gear problem

Postby GExS » Wed Jun 23, 2021 7:05 pm

Standard TV175, with an untouched gearbox. First gear sometimes is hard to go in. Gears cables and clutch replaced, both set correctly etc. Still the same problem, sometimes difficult to put into first gear. Before I start the strip down, any ideas on what could be worn on or around the gears?

Play @ the head set end, a lot of disparate items can wear & cause headscratching...

Most likely the clutch is dragging slightly, just try tightening the adjuster a little at a time and see if that helps. So long as you dont have to go so far that you cause clutch slip it'll be fine

If the arm that clamps on to the gear selector cursor shaft is loose on the splines, or if there is excessive play in any part of the linkage, it will affect first gear mostly.

The design of the whole external linkage is not good IMO. Too many moving parts to wear.

The selector arm particuarly with it's tiny circlip, is best replaced with an (M5 to M6 usually) screw clamping rose type rod end bearing in turn connected to the gear change arm. That eliminates play completely.

I finally got into the gearbox, the clutch basket and sliding dog were both worn so I replaced them and it now changes gear perfectly.
