Are the side panel buffers essential. Thinking of removing rear struts as using short runners. Only other use for struts is rear runner boards I presume

without the strut and rubber the side panel can rub on the engine casing kickstart side...

I think the rubbers help to hold the panels in a more secure way, by exerting a slight outward force onto the panel, it gives the clips something to resist against.
Plus creates the correct form of the panel.

My only observation is that once you've cut them off if you change your mind you'd have to weld them back on and they're be hidden under the panel anyway. Personally I would just cut the dog leg off the flywheel side because that can just been bolted back on at a later date

Without the rubber buffers the panels vibrate and crack much easier.
