Strange one!!!

Mates go a series 2 li200 engine( standard) apart from 25 mm carb, was have a maintenance day on it yesterday ,cleaned carb,changed plug(7to8) as going to France, when he started it up it ran backed & stopped, wouldn’t start
Removed plug & gap is shut up, refitted old plug & still no start , removed plug & gap shut again, looked down barrel, nothing obvious, replaced plug with a short reach plug & starts first time & runs fine. He went back to it this morning took plug out kicked it a couple of time, put original plug back in(re gapped) & scoot starts & runs perfectly, I’m at a loss on this, any ideas?????
