Recommended engine oil

Postby andrewgc » Mon Nov 13, 2017 9:27 pm

Guys,

just asking what engine oil you recommend for a bog standard series 1 LI (albeit fitted with a 125 special engine) , theres such a vast range out there i want the best one available as the cost difference between most of them is not enough to worry about

thanks all

They will all do the trick. Just so long as you get the right grade.

Take it you are asking about Gearbox oil and not the 2 stroke oil that lubricates the crankshaft and top end ?

If it's 2t your after I found Motul 510 synthetic to be really good pricey at £7Ltr.
Virtualy no smoke which I like.

That was before I bought up all the Castrol fully synthetic 2t localy Tesco were selling it off a £2.50Ltr.
Again low smoke.

Gearbox-

Rock oil ST 90 for me easily obtainable £5/6 per Ltr.
Everybody seems to have there own preference with oils and fuels :)

Don't be tempted to use EP oils in the gearbox. EP is good for the gears but bad for the clutch. Only use EP oils in bikes with dry clutches.

The Castrol offer was a few months ago so you may be still lucky .
If you see it on the shelf ask them to check the price as it was marked up at £7 ltr but when scanned it came up reduced to £2.50 .
Dont think they'll be any left in West Yorkshire as I bought most of it :o

I use Rock Oil ST90 with standard clutch, Putoline SAE90 with Readspeed 5 plate clutch (as per their recommendation) and Castrol Classic ST90 with a standard clutch in my sidecar combo (again on recommendation).

2T oil, I use Rockoil Groundsman Semi-Synth, works out at around £4 a litre from Tines, you really do not need modern fancy fully synth in a standard barrell

Totally agree but the O/P said he isn't worried about the cost and if you can find fully synthetic for £2.50 Ltr and spank Tesco at the same time why not. :D

Hi Phil D you stated that this was fully synth castrol oil in your earlier post . this oil is actually semi synth not fully synth if you are not aware
it is the power one racing that was the fully synth version , tescos never sold power one racing .
i also bought a large stock of the oil while the deal was on at tesco a while ago , although i dont use it myself

:D I'm sure it said fully synthetic in German , whatever it is it was a bargain.
Just shows what Mark up Tesco put on stuff.
