Am I the only one?

Postby swissdean » Sun Jan 14, 2018 11:18 am

I fear I may be booted off for this.. and not wishing
to detpress everyone but I just commented to a friend
That £4K was good price for a s2 tv175.. got me
Thinking with £7k -£12k engines available that
Will easily throw out north of 20 bhp have
We all gone mad? I hit 51 today, have
2 s3 in my garage and lavished 1000s on
Them and even still they are pretty average.

Why do I do this, because my kids have
Grown up, so I have time and money back, I earn
A shed load more than when I was 18 and can do
Now what I couldn’t then.. and I really enjoy it

thing is though a) I will never get close
To my money back .. even with the mad
Prices being asked today..and I have no
expectation that the majority of the
Next generation will be interested in a)
Paying the rices and b) doing the
Maintenance

I’ve got probably max ten riding years
Left in me.,

Don’t you think there will be a glut of
Amazing but unridden scoots coming
In ten years., going for fractions of
What they cost? Or maybe it’s just me?

My thinking sell surplus now before
the market crashes.,,

Or maybe it’s just me?

Ps, this is an amazing forum/ club, I am
Very happy to be part of

Stop worrying life’s to short, just ride um and enjoy um. Regarding getting your money back.....no definitely not or anything close to what you have spent, go in with that attitude and you won’t be disappointed.

You wont get anywhere near the money that you've spent on them..............but if you did, what would you spend it on ? A more expensive funeral ! By the way I'm 68 next week but I'm still riding, you've got a few years left yet, enjoy them.

Who cares? I've been fixing and selling motorbikes and scooters (almost always at a loss) in one form or another since before I had a provisional licence. I'd prefer to make offensive profit from it but I don't. The way I look at it is that it costs me maybe £1000 a year on average, probably less which isn't far off what people spend on golf club membership. I don't include stupid trousers in the cost because that's offset by the cost of pork pie hats, boating blazers and bowling shoes.

Its one of a few hobbies that I know where your fun thing appreciates in price to compensate for the fortunes that these scooters consume. The crunch may come sometime as we thin out our collection, but its a world market and we can always sell them back to the Italians. As for me, I'm selling a few this year, just so that i can get down to a rideable number.

As for age, I wouldn't worry about that. Just have a look at the age group at those classic motorbike do's

You do it for love.

As for the market cooling I'd consider that inevitable as we are all getting older. I can see it ending up rather like the vintage bike scene with probably a lot of dealers having collapsed and it being kept going by a small network of people in the know. But expect to see fewer scooters about. I'm okay with that thought myself. If we're honest we're all big kids who still get a buzz out of spending money on our toys, so maybe a bit of maturity isn't a bad thing.

As for selling them, well yes, it's daft really. You really can't ride them all. I'm as big an offender as the next man and something has to get moth balled as you ride a couple of favourites. It's difficult. I'd be sorry to sell them, but you might as well.

Hi Swissdean,
Only 51 Happy birthday.
I am hoping to register my GP and Jet as historic in 2 years time. When emission zones become popular I am hoping historic vehicles will be exempt and therefore more desirable.

Well I've got 12 years on you and still have no problems with riding - it's easier on the Tmax 530 though. ;)

Just enjoy it while you can :D

If we sat and considered what the cost of having fun doing what you enjoy should be, it's priceless.
My scooters owe me nothing, so if I ever did sell one it would probably pay for a weeks holiday! I'd rather save for the holiday and keep the scooters 8-)

My wife is convinced that she will get my money back when I leave this earth.
After all the parts I needed to restore my scooter all came in £10 parcels... all 100 of them.

I can’t think of anything better worth wasting time and money on than sheds and lambrettas, just keep enjoying the tinkering and riding. What else would we do? :D

Great to here there are so many Lammie addicts out there! I'm still riding and fixing my battered pride and joy (SX 175).

I claim bragging rights in that my first Lammie was a Series 2 TV I75 When I was 16, and next month I'll hit 70... (and probably a rapid racking up of insurance cost) , but it's still worth it!
