The split seems to follow the reinforcing belt and it LOOKs like it has only one ply  I though even the low load rating tyres had 2 ply's (layers) of reinforcing and 3 for the high load ones.

Personally, since the Swalbe debacle, I will only use mainstream branded tyres like Conti, Dunlop, Michelin or Pirelli. These companies have fully funded research and development departments and full on quality control and if you shop around, they aren't that much more expensive.

Unfortunatly these SIP tyres came with the bike. Now changed to S1. Won't use the SIP tyres again..
Shocked to see it rip around the tread. Yes these were tested for leaks in a water bath. I'm not convinced this was down to the slow puncture, but I can't find any evidence of an entry wound. I will put it down to experience.

Only one incident of an SIP tyre failure in this thread.

When the Swable issue was identified in a post, many similar examples came to light straight away, either direct from forum users or Scootering acquaintances.

SIP may well be fine Martin, just saying I personally prefer major brands.

Going back to that photo, I thought that all tyres had at least 2 ply's running diagonally across the carcass in opposing directions, there only looks to be one in the picture unless it has ripped through 2 in a dead straight line :?

Definitely needs to be returned imho.

I agree Colin. SIP should see this tyre.

The Sip Performer tyres are made by Vee Rubber, a well established rubber company in Thailand. Sip being probably the biggest scooter specialist in the world, I'd guess this is their top selling tyre and probably the most popular 10" scooter in Europe. I've seen and heard of tyre failures for just about every tyre out there, but all, with the exception of Schwalbe, were isolated incidents. Given that this tyre had a chequered history and [imo] low pressure, it wouldn't be fair to write off the brand just yet.

I think that Mitas tyres are manufactured in Slovenia and Anlas tyres in Turkey but think most other scooter tyres I can think of are made in the far east, though Michelin may also be an exception.

I was experiencing a loss of pressure with the Conti that then developed a side wall buckle on me. I'd pump it back up to 24psi and 2 days later it would level out at 20. I'm glad I replaced it when I did.
Its reasonable to expect a certain amount of pressure loss when a tyre begins to fail.
If I was see this unexpected loss of pressure again, I would just replace the tyre regardless of any other evidence either way. It's a warning sign. I can't ignore it.

I don't think it matters too much where a tyre is manufactured, I have no doubt that major brands also use far eastern or East European factories as well. The difference will be in the level of quality control exercised. A major manufacturer might require a far higher level of sampling of raw materials and destructive testing to ensure consistent product than a budget brand.
