Ts1 runs but won't start

Postby Freight10 » Thu Apr 05, 2018 1:41 pm

Hi all, after some advice please.
Coming back from Mablethorpe last year my scooter ran like a dream, got to services at Wisbeach, filled up with fuel and then... nothing... had to be recovered.

So over the winter I've replaced the entire electricall system with a varitronic as it appeared the stator had failed...

Anyway, all done now, but it won't start normally, I checked the fuel and that seems fine, so I poured a little in to the carb and it started straight away, whilst running i strobed the timing and that's fine at 20 BTDC.

Turned it off and for the rest of the day started perfectly, I've left it a few weeks and now back to square 1, so i put some fuel in the carb again and she fired up no problem...

Any ideas ???

Thanks in advance Trevor.

Sounds like fuel tap to me,check the filter in the fuel tap.By the way,I set my timing at 17 degrees BTDC just to be on the safe side.

What does the compression feel like and when were the rings last checked?

don't think the Varitronic can be set that far at tick over. I think the latest advice is 21 at tick over. I think mines at 23 but that's on an RT230. 20 on a TS1 should be a good start

Thanks Guys for all the replies, Some food for thought there..

HxPaul.. New fuel tap from Cam Lam, i know it works perfectly so ive ruled that out, thanks for the post though

Coaster... Compression is very good, new piston & rings back in August last year when i rebuilt the engine.

Raveydavey... Mines a 240 TS1, as i said, once its warm, starts first kick every time, its just the initial starting from cold...

Scooterdude.. Excellent call, now youve said it, a mate had the same issue a couple of years ago when we rode to the Isle Of Wight... thats a job for the weekend and i will get back to you,

Thanks again all, really appreciate the advice..

if it starts fine when its warm, but wont start from cold i would have a look at your choke, is it opening all the way and closing correctly, check the choke jet is not blocked, then check that the air passage the choke jet uses is clear of obstructions and you should be able to start it from cold, is the choke jet big enough also ?

Thanks again

Holty...Thanks i will definitely have a look at the choke jet as well, i did a quick rekki, but it looked ok, i will take a more in depth look..

Mr mugello... i checked that today, that was what i thought it was so i ordered an extra long adjuster and put it all together today which took all the slack out of it, still no joy though...

Give choke a go, by pulling the inner choke cable by hand to start.

Thanks all for your help, after trying everything on the carb and still no joy I decided to put the old carb back on... started 1st kick and is running perfectly, so although not sure what the fault is with the dellorto yet... at least it's working.

More than likely a choke problem then,
