1955 Model D 150 - Engine paint, when applied?

Postby Big Al » Wed Apr 01, 2020 3:56 pm

According to Vittorio Tessera in his book "Lambretta Restoration Guide" 2012, the D150 engine, all castings and intake manifold were sprayed in a light coat of aluminium paint (modern equivalent: Fiat 690), with no lacquer.

Would the engine have been sprayed as a complete unit at the factory, or before assembly?

I intend to spray my next set of casings bolted together without gaskets before assembly using rattle cans. I've no idea how they did it at the factory but it will be essential to give the paint a good coating of fuel proof laquer or the paint will come straight off when the carb leaks. I use etch primer then primer, the colour and then laquer.
I hope this helps.

I use Seymour Alumi Blast. Looks perfect and tough as nails once it's set and easy to touch up.

Hi Rob.
Does it matter which make of etch primer and grey primer it is?
I already have the Fiat 690 aerosol can from Lambretta Paints in Ellesmere Port, and an aerosol can of ProXL Matt Lacquer to use on the engine.
Should the engine casing be entirely free of any previous paint before applying the etch primer?
Al.

I would try painting the gearchange cover first with the paint you want to use to make sure its compatible. I clean the alloy with a Scotchbrite pad. This should remove any remaining original paint.

Thanks Rob.
Some time ago I fully degreased the engine, washed and dried it all thoroughly and then sprayed an aluminium spray straight on to it (as they apparently did in the factory).
Unfortunately, the paint has not taken properly, and you can easily scratch it off with a finger nail. In some places it has just flaked on its own. It was an aerosol bought locally at a motor factors,
and the colour is not quite right anyway, so I bought the Fiat 690 spray from Lambretta Paints to try again.
Do you think I should I try to remove all traces of paint and start again with an etch primer?

Can anyone else help with a reply to my above query please?
Will etch primer take on a previously painted surface, or should I remove it all?

You will need to clean the paint off for the etch primer to do its job. Petrol will do it I think.
