Cheers guys, appreciate the kind comments. Nick, I don't think 'Andy' wants the steps back- I bought them from the tip, where he'd left them! Anyway, the next project is IN the garage and waiting to go :D

Really enjoyed reading the thread from start to finish. Attention to detail on the re-build is amazing and added to that you built (and repaired) the engine unit from scratch. The end result is an absolutely stunning looking scooter. Can't wait for you to start the next one!!!

Regards

Michael :) :) :)

Thanks Michael :D . I try not to go overboard on detail, and there are certainly plenty of items I upgraded from the orginal factory finish, so it's not strictly faithfull restoration by any means. I read a thread once on a classic car site about a guy who was restoring a Volvo Amazon. He'd sprayed the heater in the correct matt black paint, but then put it up in his loft for six months to allow the paint to harden before he would fit it . Can't see the point of going that far- you'd be frightened to drive it if it was that perfect.

Anyway, the next project is a 1966 SX150 in grey, sourced from a guy up in Newcastle. I really do not like grey. I have a feeling it'll end up being Apple Green. And I'm now working full time again, I should be able to keep it 8-) . I'll kick it off in a few days with a few 'before' pics...

If anyone's after an Italian GP125, it's still available from this dealer in Kettering, Northants......

Good for you. Top tip- anything that needs painting or plating, dry build it first to make sure it fits perfectly. And when dry building the body panels, don't settle for just quickly bolting each part in place, you must use all the grommets, washers and rubbers that will be in place for the final build. If you don't you can easily end up with panel gaps or panels rubbing against each other because the grommet/washer/rubber thicknesses weren't taken into account at dry build stage.

As an example, on series 1 and 2's the side panel locating lugs on the frame must be checked for alignment before the frame is sprayed. They're pretty sturdy, but if the bike has ever had a smash, they can and do bend out of true.

Bottom line, take your time, and if you ever have a bad session, don't get frustrated by it and end up doing something silly, walk away and pick it up again another day. Good luck! :D

Wow! The end result of a meticulous re-build is that the scooter looks stunning in every respect. Thanks for sharing the pictures as the scooter was re-built - great to see how it all comes together. You must be well pleased.

Thanks guys, appreciate the comments :). I forgot to mention headlamps when dry building. Even if you're using the original rim that came out of the bike, you need to make sure the new or refurbished original will fit properly. Most of the remade ones don't, as I've found to my cost over the years. Saves a lot of heartache down the road if it's all checked before being painted.

What a nice job done, most impressed.
About 60% through my TV 3 rebuild.
What paint system did your man use?

He used 2-pack paint, and then spent a long time buffing using various grades of Farecla compound and polish to get a nice even shine. He really went the extra mile. He's virtually retired so just does the odd respray when he feels like it.

Thanks, thinking of doing mine in cellulose as I've done that before on a few classic cars.
Great scooter!

Great job and fantastic result. Beware the stainless panel springs - a good idea but I ditched mine after having to have my side panel re-sprayed after it came off - twice!
