If there is another scooter boom, you'll be at the front Paul, all you will need is the 'tache and a 3/4 leather to compliment...

I just noticed the ball end levers. That could set the cats amongst the pigeons. Were they OEM fitted or not, you have to wonder.

Whatever, they are a no brainer IMHO, having known somebody skewered by a non ball end lever, though that didn't stop the Medicals digging around in his leg, looking for the 'broken off ball' that never existed. They presumed that nobody was silly enough to still be using sharp levers, & that was in the early 70's. What you call a 'Loose-loose' scenario, I suppose :?

To be honest, I never noticed that in the picture. I was admiring the leather jacket too much :P

I am, however, going to go with ball ended ones. I have just purchased a set from a well known dealer who I frequently use. They weren’t expensive and I can see why. I’ll be buying another set shortly.

Top end done. Just need a leak down test, to trial fit exhaust and decide what to do about the Uni Mag housing- the cylinder cowl holes do not line up. Having compared it with a SIL one, it is definitely the Uni one that is wrong.

It is, mate. It’s the static one. I’ll have to wait until the bodywork is all done to set it up.

Nice one I’m in same position as you with the engine so won’t be finally setting up yet heard good reports about them, I went for the sport one ;)

Hi Paul

Would you recommend the uni mag flange then, or are you gonna be able to fix/bodge to make good?

Looking good though.

Thanks

Paddy.

Hi.
I used the uni mag house and I had to elongate the holes in both cowls to get them to fit. I checked everything before paint so all the holes are painted!!
Cheers Shane

Paddy, your post prompted me to have another look at this. I have another new Uni mag flange for another engine build. As you can see from the photo below, I have the same issue. It is miles out.

This same Scootopia cowling when held against an old SIL mag flange, matches up fine.

On the plus side, I have just checked the fan cowling to the Uni mag flange and this does marry up.

The main benefit of the Uni mag flange is that they are build up around where the fan cowling screws go. This is a big plus in my eyes but for my other build, I’ll probably re-use the SIL mag flange which does need a broken screw drilling out and re-welding and tapping. Very disappointing, to be honest.

The leak down test did reveal an air leak which seems to have been easily resolved by just tightening the inlet manifold screw. It appears to be holding pressure well now but I’ll check in the morning.

This is for Turbo Trev who has asked about old plates.

Image

I am going to use this plate again but it was actually made out of an old aluminium sign like the ones you used to see on railway stations. It’s a good 5mm thick and someone took the trouble to chamfer the edges.

Failing that, Tippers Vintage plates will provide you with a blank and you can add vinyl letters.
