The Ginger Stepchild....

Seems like the old thread has been lost, so a bit of history and update.

Once upon a time, a long long way away, in a place called Bawtry near the land of Dancaster, I bought The Ginger Stepchild from my mate Bones. The local inhabitants were fond of lights and mirrors and other similar atrocities. Cutdowns and racers were not favoured among the local new-borns. The locals knew of its existence, but they never talked about 'The Ginger Stepchild'.

It's a Jet200 frame with shortened headstock and forks to suit the Vega leggies. My initial intention was to continue the Grp6 racer theme but changed my mind in favour of a hinged loop welded on panels GP cutdown, as you do, as it was pretty trick at the time!

(This is gonna take some time to post up as the kids are giving me grief...)

This is how she was until a couple of weeks ago. Still with the intention of a hinged loop and welded panels.

However, the Old Skool Lambretta FB page has sent me in an early 80s direction. So no hinged loop, no panels. I'd always intended putting the electrics in the std toolbox. Access would be from the front when the hinged loop was up. Now that's not happening there's a problem as the std toolbox door has been welded and frenched in. So I decided to get in thru the back. Next problem. Long range tank fitted.

No bother, they didn't exist early 80s. Got to come out. Decision made, time to hack the toolbox apart to hide the electrics in.

the regulator can get quite warm (hence the alloy and cooling fins for heat dispersement). might be an idea to try and vent the area around the regulator.....just a thought :)

Cheers Mick, considered that myself, thought I might vent the underside with a kind of ram air scoop, or even a couple of slots in the front of the side compartments, either side of the loop.

Did a bit of work a couple of weeks ago tidying up the back end, it was cut a bit rough previously.

Trimmed back end smooth and offered up a mudguard. I usually like huggers but they didn't really exist in 80s, although Spiritwalker had one!

Trimmed back rear hangers and bolted muddy to them. Bit of shaping to muddy. Tapped frame for a third point mounting. Insert your own entendres.

I do love a hugger Martin, not very 80s though, well see. The back end not coming together very well ref: back light and no. Plate set up, there's not a lot of room on the back of the frame for mounting.

Got me self a mig welder so I could fabricate/repair bits and pieces without having to ask Nobby all the time. First job to do for a bit of practice... make a sidestand.

Tried filling the back end holes with weld....

Image

Not the most successful attempt, blew some of the existing metal away... GRRRR. Think I'll use filler on the rest, but had some tips from Nobby!

Marking out slots for toolbox vents

Next job hopefully to cut slots in the toolbox and put some damper brackets on the forks for the Kwaka steering dampers. A big thanks must go to DazTS1 who not only let me have a set off his track bike, but also posted them and let me have them for nowt. A pint or two on its way to you at some point Daz, cheers fella.

Chain drilling slots

Dremel cut between

Tidied up, needs a little bit of tweaking to finish the slot.

Another fine mesh.

Image

Not sure whether to match other side or not... had a concern about water/rain getting into electrics.

Loving the built . Im not a welder , just an enthusiastic trier :) a top tip i was given ..and used in a similar situation, is to use a block of copper behind the hole, tight to the metal, this acts as heatsink to help stop blowing holes , with the added benefit , the weld doesnt stick to it :)

Cheers Russ... where to find a block of copper?
