My GP 125

Postby Stevepshipley » Mon Dec 28, 2015 3:57 pm

Hi all, merry Xmas etc. Santa dropped this off just before Christmas. Originally from somewhere near Milan I believe. I've never owned a GP before and very pleased with this. It looks really straight and original, quick squirt of easy start and I rode it up and down the drive. I'm going to need some help though.
My plan is to keep the engine as original on points etc, and try and restore as close as possible to original. It has been repainted (externally) and it's not good. I need to know what a factory model should look like, what parts were chrome or nickel plated etc. Should wheel rims be white or grey, petrol and choke taps are painted alloy, is this right? Lots of questions to ask, is there a good reference source somewhere?

Damn! Beat me to it.

I like that. Looks good and straight. Hardly needs any work under the panels. You could probably just replace the trim and tidy it up. Do a bit of work on the engine. You'd be well away.

Nice project, get a front mudguard and some front dampeners welded on it
GT 186 kit and some stickers all over it and ride it ...... 8-) G.

That is very, very nice. I'd be inclined to keep the front mudguard as a talking point :-).

All I'd say is that before you tear it all apart, just think how many GPs there are in this state. Not many.

The left hand footboard doesn't look right in the pictures. Is it a GP type and not Li ?. Could be just the angle of the photo, or the fit of the footboard. That will make a nice scooter with a bit of work. Well done.

That looks like a nice little project, pretty straight and complete, which won't take much to put on the road. Shows there's still projects out there. You may want to consider changing the seat if you intend travelling any distance on it though as the coffin seats are very uncomfortable

I want to reuse the wiring loom but the outer sheath is too brittle. Presumably i can get some new sheathing from somewhere like maplins?

I love the concept of reusing as much of the original GP as possible and I'd certainly do the same as you. But, I'd draw the line at reusing the wiring especially if you're going to replace the sheathing.

Only my opinion. Good luck and keep us posted.

Dunno what the green light is?? Looks like someone fitted some kind of light indicator at some time. Maybe fuel warning? Nothing wired to it though. I'll get the headset repaired and blanked off

Quick update, frames with my mate for a bit of repair work and panels in a box waiting for my painter to fit me in.

Just stripped engine casings and all looks OK. ...

Need to check piston and bore wear but hoping to get away with just new rings

Took some bits for rechroming today and was gonna get these bits replated. But they've come up OK.

Came across this stuff in Aldi £2 a bottle, cleaned all nickel plated stuff up a treat and great for old nuts and bolts and stuff

Casings for cleaning tomorrow

Casings back from cleaning, decided on soda blasting in the end. I wanted them to look "factoryish"
