Nice one, Col. Maybe the end is in sight for both of us ? I should have a better idea by this time next week.

The ignition circuit worked fine a few days back and, after 6 or 7 kicks, the engine fired up okay :D But, the only working lights were the speedo, rear and brake. I can't say I was shocked. There's always something that doesn't work first time, for me anyway.

After half an hour of reviewing pictures of wiring circuits, I was confused as the simplified AC loom that I have used on 2 or 3 rebuilds before was no longer, how shall we say, simple :| Thankfully, the logical side of my brain told me that with leaving a couple of wires taped up, I must have wired it correctly.

Now I am no expert with a Multimeter in hand but everything I tried pointed to this being the offender:

Actually, that's incorrect as that is a picture of the new one which I fitted today. Fitting the new switch then resulted in:

Congrats a good looking scooter with just the right amount of work done to it. Shame about the tyres though

Jim, I hunted high and low for a set of Cheng Shin to no avail :P

I still have quite a few things to sort out.

I have another air filter to try out when I get the panels painted as the breath sweet one compresses badly against the panel.

I also have a feeling the exhaust baffles had worked loose when the engine was last in a scoot. That said, I tried shaking the exhaust before I refitted it and they didn't move!

The rear shock. It's a "Gaz" one but appears too spongey for my liking. I shall give it a go though.

Oh, get it MOT'd, registered and ride the thing!

Well, the Special now possesses an MOT and the V55/5 will be going in the post tomorrow.

The ride to and from the MOT was the first chance I've had to ride it. I have to say I was impressed both by the reverse pull drum brake and the rear shock (I have only done 20 miles so I know it's early days). However, the shock is not going to be able to cope with a fully rally laden rear end, so I'm going to have to look at either a new spring or, maybe, a spacer to put the spring under a bit more tension

Panels should be back from painters in 2 or 3 weeks. I can then start trying out a new air filter.

Looking good Paul, what's the plan with the exhaust? My offer of my spare new BGM still stands although I'm lending it to Darrel Taylor for the clubman dyno shootout which seems to be fairly imminent. I could get him to send it to you when he's done with it? just let me know 8-)

Thanks, lads :)

Col, thanks, yes, I do remember your kind offer. I'll see how the old one goes for a few miles. At least my old one has been fettled to fit without any stress points caused by the 8mm packer.

I have spent the weekend fettling parts - the friction free clutch cable turned out to be anything but friction free, carb mixture screw, carb filters, tightening various bits that seem to be making a break for freedom (I lost a panel handle though :( )

Now pretty happy with most things except, perhaps, the reverse pull front drum. It's certainly nowhere near as good as a reverse pull internal disc but the shoes won't be bed in properly so, maybe, there is hope yet. I'll run it to work and back for the couple of weeks and then strip it before Scarborough.
