My understanding was that you could only declare it exempt when taxing it.

I guess you could SORN it and re-tax it at the end of May. I think the change comes in around the 20th.

I believe it needs to have a current MOT on the date that it becomes exempt, then when the Tax is due then no MOT will be required.

Apparently to stop people just cobbling old piles of shit together they had lying around in the garage and riding them, wait a minute isn't that what happens now anyway?

Local MOT lad told me this but could be wrong.

My local Royal Enfield dealer who does MOT's is not sure either.

I am in the same position with my scooter. From the reading I have done, if you want to avoid having scoot MOT'd again, my understanding is, as 'rossclark' has suggested above, SORN it, then re-tax at end of May!
Think I will just get mine MOT'd for peace of mind!

So, praps being a bit of a plank, & not expecting a definitive answer... Might the implication of these, with inevitable yet to be ironed out teething problems, changes likely to be that a currently SORN'ed ped will be good to go if taxed at the end of May? Any ideas gratefully received (with thanx in advance)?

Ok, so I have just spoken to the DVLA who put me in touch with the DVSA. They said to fill out (after 20th May, as the new form will be on the website then) a V112 then hand this into the post office with the tax reminder instead of the mot. This will then register the bike Mot exempt. Sounds simple....

You wont need to mess around with a v112 form if you tax it on line (free tax anyway) just use the long number on your reminder.

Mine was officially mot’d for the last time in April but I suspect some insurance companies will insist on it being mot’d before they will provide cover.

For the small cost involved it gives you peace of mind that everything is as it should be, so probably a good thing to carry on with it.

TBH, I will get an mot on it anyway, if anything it keeps my bike records in order and if ever sold will be a good record of mileage per year ect.

I would ask:- Do insurance companies currently require a pre 1960 machine to have an MOT before they will insure it?
If not, then i cant see why they would make such a ruling for a 1977 machine.
Visa versa applies of course.

No, they don't currently require pre 1960 bikes to have an mot.

Don't think insurances companies will do that, because if they do the companies that don't will get all the trade. I got a quote from Devitt and they didn't even know about the new MOT rules.

2 of my original (ie no modifications) lambrettas are taxed till later in the year, but due for an MoT soon. However, from reading all the info, do we need to fill out Form V112 "Declaration of exemption from MOT," to initially tell the DoT that it is exempt, or is it automatically given?

Well as of 10 minuets ago, I have now registered mine on line as mot exempt. Absolute doddle. Did it while applying for my £0 road tax. :D

There is no link Colin, it came up as I went to tax it. It said the bike is over 40 years and is exempt for Mot. I had to tick a box to state it was exempt and that was it. :D
Now MOT exempt as well. Really easy.

https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax

Just go there and follow the instructions - did my GP this morning which was already registerd as a VHI.

I wonder if DVLA are keeping stats on how many Lambrettas went off SORN today?
