Lambretta electric motor conversion.

Postby solostax » Sun Apr 01, 2018 12:02 am

The day of common place electric autonomous vehicles both on land and in the air is close at hand, and the first road fatality of the driverless taxi has been recorded. Is this then the inevitable future of road going vehicles? Are we ready to entrust our lives to (bearing in mind personal computer reliability) the complex processor? If so, the all-electric vehicle will play an important part as a step in this evolution.

There are some serious issues concerning all electric powered road going vehicles, mainly concerning the mileage range and en-route re-charging facilities. Other considerations such as initial price, depreciation, maintenance and cost of replacement batteries are also factors to be weighed up .But a seemingly ignored feature is the safety threat they may pose to road users, be they pedestrians, cyclists, or other drivers.

The fact that electric vehicles in use are almost silent, the real danger of them becoming “silent assassins” causing carnage on the high streets should not be overlooked. In times past, numerous drunken revellers stumbling back home in the very dark and early hours have been cut down by electric milk floats. Many a Coroner was heard to say “He probably didn’t hear it coming”

Lessons from history have shown that huge increases in death, injury or financial loss occur when a change affecting one or more of our natural senses is introduced to the public. Cases in point being 1/ Sight ...the blackout policy during the last war caused many casualties. 2/Smell…. The introduction of natural gas, which is odourless, resulted in many being unaware of a gas leak and consequently being gassed or blown up. 3/Taste…..The reduction of Zinc in drinking water resulting in the inability to taste rancid food causing poisoning. 4/Touch ...The introduction of new paper currency resulting in a tactile sensation whereby notes which stick together are not being detected 5/...Sound ….The policy of using regional, rather than a high class London accent for public announcements and news dissemination on TV and Radio, has caused widespread confusion and misunderstanding resulting in death and destruction .

With Electric vehicles more popular, it is now becoming a common option to buy models with either a conventional petrol engine or an electric motor, some the hybrid of both. Regardless of the installed power unit, the bodywork is indistinguishable from the outside. On closer inspection the lack of exhaust pipe might be the only clue.

Because this is the future, there are now manufacturers producing classic styled electric scooters together with companies providing a conversion service replacing the original 2 stroke engines fitted to vintage Lambrettas and Vespas with several ‘different wattage’ powered electric motors. These being the equivalent to the 125cc 150cc 175cc and 200cc two stroke petrol versions.

Road users of today need all of their natural senses to help staying alive on our busy highways. Sight, sound, smell, taste and touch are all vital for continued safety, and the denial of sound by stealth, the electric vehicle may become a challenge to safety. So unless we are prepared for an unhealthy cacophony of similar sounding hooters and buzzers that alert others of our closeness we must think outside of the box.

If, when considering purchasing an electric scooter, the ‘Silent’ characteristic poses the main deciding factor against, be advised that there is a solution compatible with all electric scooters. The Fitment of a petrol engine sound simulator!

Further to our patented clocks that play the appropriate engine sound when the hour hand points to a particular scooter, (twelve classic models on clock face), we now manufacture a plug and play programmable engine sound module fitted inside the scooter’s bodywork. This box produces the exact unique sound and amplitude of the original engine and simulates that varying sound throughout the rpm range governed by the twist grip speed setting. All classic scooter models are catered for with variable amplification that can even exceed the original engine’s decibel level. The programmable features include:-

1a/ Always sound ON …Then programmable menu via helmet visor’s ‘ heads up display’ and handlebar rotary switch…

1b/ Chosen classic engine sound. Lambretta , Vespa, Triumph Tina, BSA sunbeam Zunzapp Bella, Heinkel Tourist and others. (must be set prior to moving, not changeable in motion.)

1c/All sound OFF (Stealth Mode).

2/ Ultra sonic radar activation (similar to reversing sensor technology). Only sounding when in proximity to other objects, people etc. Area range and detection cone variable by handlebar flick switch.

3a/Police sirens, 7 country options, selected by head movement detector built into helmet. (Use prohibited in UK).

3b/National Anthems, auto activated by sensing temperature probe attached to headlight. (28 options including Chinese by default)

4/ MP3 player.. .linked to helmet Bluetooth intercom., On board SatNav and mobile phone.

5/Pre-recorded Voice alerts, (“ATTENTION ATTENTION “ “ACHTUNG ACHTUNG” “VERDUFTEN SCHNELL VERDUFTEN SCHNELL” and Exhaust backfire) at ear splitting volume, broadcast through 150 watt amplifier and matching speakers. Now featuring the Dukes of Hazzard air horns theme ‘Dixie’ in G major (Ultra loud). Tunes/Alerts selected by Rapid Eye Movement detector incorporated in handlebar mounted rear view mirror,(This feature can be auto activated by the proximity sensors or by manual “machine gun type” trigger switch mounted on the handlebars).

Despite the module being primarily designed as a safety device to warn others of the vehicles presence, we are also working on expanding the electronic simulator to include a dummy exhaust pipe that emits smoke (courtesy of Vape technology) and a vibration module to replicate the engine’s induced fingertip tingle characteristic (sometimes referred to as ‘white finger syndrome’). Also an add on authentic (depending on 2 stroke oil brand ) hot engine aroma diffuser, using crystals (courtesy of “Scratch and Smell “technology) together with an artificial oil drip drop, (environmentally friendly), are all in the development pipeline.

The final effect, we believe, is that once fitted to a new electric powered or converted vintage scooter, this combination becomes a realistic cost effective alternative to the inefficient, out dated and unreliable two stroke engine, whilst retaining the sound and smell of the original creation .The ultimate Wow factor!!
