Rapido 225 Classic is a pretty good all-rounder.

Lot's of grunt with a clubman and about an extra 10 MPH but less grunt on a JL3.

Classic 225 for relaxed touring at 60, with plenty left for when you want it. Clubman and 4.8 4th ratio. Standard looks with much enhanced performance.

Yes, they both have the same transfer arrangement. The Rapido Race pushes the power higher up the rev range and produces a narrower power, making it less of a tourer and means that you chase the power up and down the gears, unless you fit shorter gearing.

I personally wouldn't go higher (lower number) than 4.8 with the classic as that makes you start to chase the power again, with the Classic already ported above 'standard'.

Despite the built in flaws of the Rapido concept, so well documented by a rival manufacturer that may have invented the wheel, it can be made to work very well.

I believe that any of the formats can be made to function in a civilised manner, but, as quite rightly said, the Classic has the greatest scope. All of them can benefit from a stroked crankshaft & IMHO it is a bit of a no brainier, enabling the transfer timings to become more 'civilised' & make for a far more tractable power unit. If the inlet duration can also be reduced, by canny choice of piston, all the better. My personal preference is a 62 mm stroke crankshaft (or 61 mm will do nicely, if you can find one.....) with a longer rod, say 118 mm.

Ported nicely, with a good flat slide carburettor breathing through a proper, adequate air filter in conjunction with a well thought out exhaust could see an engine pulling TV200 equivalent gearing in top, fuss free, from about where the Knutsford City Limits end as you rejoin the M6 ;)

Have aTS1 at the moment and was thinking if its possible, to use its piston and head with a rapido barrel, and with a LTH reed valve fitted.Exhaust would be a BGM clubman.

Won't the piston cutouts be on the wrong side ?

To add my bit. I have a 238 Rapido, 30mm PHBH with a AF 5 speed. Geared to do 85.
22hps 18 torque. Pulls like a train, quicker in acceleration than my 225TS1 35mm TMX reed motor.
Nicer to ride, set up for touring. A real pleasure.

I've used TS1 pistons in many rapido/cast cylinders, now there's a wider choice in oversizes there's a lot more scope after 70mm, to gain a real advantage cut a boost port or multiple boost ports from the inlet,

I had a rapido 225 classic with a 28mm delly and a sterling exhaust with std gp gearing it pulled like a train 2s up it would easily keep up with solo p2s on the flat and would leave them for dead on hills

Aren’t all rapido’s greedy bar-stewards and therefore cheaper to shell out on a GT RT?

Have you had the TS1 dynoed by a decent dyno centre?

You will get around 8/10 m/l with a piston ported 225 race rapido
Put a reed on it and it will improve the fuel consumption- around 10-12)it also sorted out my low down lumpyness on a 225 race
But
Factor in the price of reed/piston etc and your making a hybrid

You could use your TS1 piston in the rapido with a reed - so there are options
Do a search on rapido port timings and there are a few posts that might help

i have a race 225 with 30mm phbh bgm and sx gearing, it pulls no problem in 4th i dont have to gear down on hills, i tend to use a ron moss piston and head, i have 2 classic rapidos 225 both with gt cranks 62 x 118 really nice engines to ride ,clubmans and 30 mil on both, one has a reed which helps with petrol

Are you saying you have a Ron moss big avanti head with a bgm clubman? I tried that and couldn't get the pipe on.

Maybe I gave up too easily?

had a race 225 for 18 years now, used to be 30mm delly and pm (quite thirsty) then 30mm pwk now 26mm pwk bgm3 clubby and RS reed and modded Wossner piston. I marked the holes in line with inlet at BDC which makes them slightly to the nearside. whereas the TS1 piston and others will be dead on top but still should work fine. used the smaller carb for economy which is great now up to 15m/l with no noticeable performance drop on the road. dyno says 2.5hp down from that first set up now 16hp but you would never know.

was going to add AF are not listing the barrels as race or classic, just a barrel with different piston options so not sure what they are. thought I read they were phasing these and TS1's out and replacing with a new barrel that has piston port and reed options
