Gearing again..... sorry!

Need help with a tuning kit, how do you tune your scooter, which kit should I choose, and all general tuning and modifcations questions are for in here.

Gearing again..... sorry!

Postby Dicky » Wed May 27, 2020 12:37 am

Reading @lockman,s thread on the TS1 pipe issues he’s having then my question is similar. I’m running the same gearing set up, ie AF Clo5e box with 18/47. Its the 35 fifth gear in mine too giving 4.81 in 5th. It revs out through the gears and maintains adequately in 5th nearly all the time. I’m tempted to go lower as it just feels to high on the revs at the speeds I want to ride at. Given it pulls no problem do I go for the 35 5th giving 4.67 but with a higher jump from 4th to 5th ie. 12% as opposed to 9% or, given it will rev out through the gears and getting away isn’t an issue at all or just treat It as. 4 speed ( 4th is same as GP 200 @ 5.22) and swap the sprockets to achieve a similar final drive to the 35 but maintaining the smaller jump to stay more in the revs.

Thinking 19/47 might be an alternative?

Apologies for the long question. Engine is a 70mm race Rapido (225) with 60 stroke crank, standard rod, 28 phbh with Reed valve and a TSR Evo pipe.

Happy to hear Advice and opinions please especially if you’ve a similar set upMost riding is 1 up btw

Do most 5speed owners prefer the 5th as an overdrive or keeping the engine on the boil ?

Good question. I haven’t really got used to it yet! I’m a bit of a short shifter (matron) so rather than 3rd doing all the work Im now employing 4th! I probably need to get used to it! Think I’m trying to achieve an overdrive to lower cruising revs but want to make sure I can get it up to speed and maintain it without having to constantly drop into 4th.unfortumately I didnt really plan my build as well as I might due to lack of experience and it kind of evolved, but it’s actually quite nice to ride, just a bit too high in the revs at the speeds I’d like to maintain.

I use it as a bit of an overdrive at 4.3:1 final drive

Wow, that’s quite low. Love to be there and pootling. That would be 20/47 on mine and just shy of 70 at 6k! I can only dream!

 Gareth has a big thumper engine which can probably put out more torque than bhp ;)
