New gear boxes

Postby Scooterlam » Sat Mar 03, 2018 12:00 pm

Hi guys.
What's the percentage difference between 4th and 5th on the 5 speed boxes and does any one know 3rd to 4th on an Italian li box.
I think Indian GP is 19% 3-4.

im just fitting an afclose 5 box, they come with 2 options for 5th gear, either 12 percent or 9 percent, you choose which will suit your engine performance, heres a pic of all the ratios

Holty, what difference would you get between the alternative 5th gear on the AF.
Would one work as almost an overdrive, and the other as a real 5th gear?
What sort of top speed increase could you expect from both?
Sorry my knowledge on gear box settings is non existent

The awnser to any of the questions would depend greatly on the characteristics of the engine.

scooterlam is correct the power delivered by the engine will dictate what ratio it will pull, as does the weight of the scooter and rider, also remember that as you go faster there is more drag to slow you down, you should be able to use either if you get your final drive ratio correct, remembering that your choice of exhaust will dictate your final drive ratio. i prefer an expansion exhaust which gives a powerband, the idea is that when you change up to the higher gear you are still in the powerband and it will pull in that higher gear.

Ok, so I have a SIL GP200 lump and gear box with 225 Rapido 28mm Delorto (reed valuve ) and a MB MK3 clubman. I am approx 13 st and the bike is an S2 full panel work. Buy adding the AF 5 speed would this add anything to the top end?
I refuse to pay £1000 for the Cyclone so the AF is a reasonable cost in comparison.
Our club usually ride around the 45-50mph mark. Which is a little slow for my liking. Local rides only. The Rapido is not set up right and is currently being looked at. Now is the time if any to add that gear box. Is it worth the additional £500. + fitting costs?
We have a few long distance rides planned for Europe this year. This bike is built for high speed touring and that's what I want. Will this help? If so how. Better top end, or more relaxed cruising. (Overdrive, for those old enough)

I’m currently building an RT 230 reed setup breathing through a 25 delly and farting out a bgm v3 clubby.
Using a SX200 G/B 15/46 4.8 FD
So going by your setup I’d say the af 5 with the 35 tooth would suit it nicely @ 4.81 fd

If you find yourself constantly dropping down to third to keep the engine in the power band then the right 5 speed box would help here. I have this fight a lot on country roads on my TS1, especially when riding into the wind. I'm considering a 5 speed box to try and make it work just as well on the country roads as it does on the motorways.
If your tuning is more on wide band grunt, then its less attractive unless you're 2 up and laden.
The MB and AF boxes are more suited to the narrow power band engines and the CML / Cyclone would be more suited to a tune more wide banded and torquey.

Ok so Cyclone way over priced
Omega bad reviews
AF sounds good, good price (well better)

Anybody has anything to say about the Broady 5 speed? Wow, just seen the price on that. Boy thought the cyclone was dear

Should like to try one of these in the combo but £500 is a costly experiment if it does not live up to expectations. Pity they don't have a demo gearbox you can try for a week or so.
