Air leak?

Postby jonno » Sat Jun 22, 2019 2:54 pm

When I start up my TS1it ticks over nicely,1200 rpm approx, but when I return from a ride where it wont rev out above 4500rpm, the tickover is higher 2200rpm and wont settle down.Does this dound like an air leak/timing/reeds? It revs ok 8000rpm when on the stand.

Check that the carburettor/manfold rubber coupling hasn't split.

The "not revving out over 4500" sounds more like electrical......i'd check/change the stator.

Have look at inlet manifold front screw that comes up from bottom buggers for leaking there .

When you say it revs out 8K on the stand....is this when its a cold engine and does the rev limiter scenario only seem to come in when under load?

Yes fast, think ive sorted it. One of the exhaust nuts wasnt tight as it should there was a lot of black gunge sprayed about. Seems it was a carb issue dropped the needle down and its a lot better, tho surely this would have meant it would bog down when I revved it on the stand?

No not really.
Even badly setup carbs will rev out ok in neutral most of the time.
Sometimes fuel frothing in the float bowl can give this problem. Hard to diagnose though.
How old is the carb? They do wear out eventually.

Had a friend who changed from a mb clubman as it wouldn’t rev out although I’ve never had any issues with my Bgm clubby on the rev front ;)
