Clo5e gearbox question

Postby Revvers » Wed Sep 11, 2019 7:19 am

Hello. I’ve recently had a new 5 speed gearbox fitted. I had a new lay shaft fitted at the same time. When the engine is in neutral, there is a buzzing noise. When I pull the clutch in, it still buzzed but then goes away when I put her in gear. Any ideas please? Is it cable adjustment or something more complex?

It sounds like your kick start plunger is partially deployed. The teeth on the plunger are just catching on the corresponding teeth on first gear. When you put it in gear, the first gear stops rotating and the noise stops.

The good news is it not your gear box at fault.

Do you have a GP gear box end plate (with the cast-in ramp)?

Cheers. I don’t know tbh, I had the box fitted at my local shop. I’ll try the kick start though

A quick check that might identify it... take the rubber rebound buffer out of your side casing and pull up on the kickstart pedal when in neutral, which may return the plunger just a little bit further. If the noise stops, you know that it is the plunger not returning fully and catching on 1st gear.

Good luck.

my experience fitting AF 5 speed is that they are less prone to kickstart/plunger issues when fitted with an SX/LI style ramp, AF do a larger plunger pin to draw the plunger further away from the first gear, also another thing to consider is the end plate/cluster bearing-6004 worn? the sound you describe and the fact you say it goes when the clutch is activated could indicate this,
