S3 Tv 175 colour

Postby Bri1951 » Tue Sep 15, 2020 6:12 pm

I have just completely stripped my series 3TV175 175TV3 532196, down for complete refurbish, it was badly painted black, but when stripping it appears to have been originally 8039 Apple Green, being 1964 I would have thought it was too early to have been this colour from new, thoughts please

That would have been very rare indeed if it was Apple Green from original. Vittorio Tessera has just revealed an Apple Green LI special in Scooternova Magazine and is the only one in that colour of that model known to exist.

It would be interesting to see if there is any white under the green on the main frame. That would probably be the original colour as opposed to primer.

As Rich says, it is highly unlikely that it was painted apple green originally. With the amount of time that has passed, it's even possible a previous bare metal restoration or re-paint has happened at some point. Just a few years after your model was manufactured, those later colours became very popular as they appeared on newer, trendy models and were 'en vogue' at the time.

Unless you purchased a machine from the dealer brand new, it's now virtually impossible to reliably verify a scooter as original as it stands today.

My dad once bought me a second hand GP200 when I was a teenager. It was repainted blue. It was only 6 years old from new.

Interesting thread. As you and Rich have said, Vittorio Tessera’s latest article in the new ScooterNova magazine is about an Apple Green 125 Special, a model never known to have had that colour until now (click link for info https://scooternova.bigcartel.com/category/magazines ) and to the best of my knowledge that colour wasn’t introduced until long after production of the TV stopped. I’d go with Paul’s guess at a respray later that decade. The res oxide primer doesn’t sound like a factory colour to me - i thought it was mainly white, or grey on spares - but i could be wrong.
Interesting to rub it down and see the changes made over the years though.

I think the red oxide primer is the giveaway to a historical re-finish mate.

Andy, thanks for showing an interest in my tv3 colour issues, the frame is shot blasted and primed now, but I still have mudguard horncast and headset, I will investigate paint on these, I have photos of frame prior to strip, but can’t upload, if I find anything conclusive I will contact you.
