SX200, TV200 + LI150 bitsa

Postby johnnyfartpants » Tue Apr 14, 2015 9:00 pm

Just signed up on here even though I've been a member for a fair while now! Here's my SX200 - bought in 1990 for 50 sheets! This is its second incarnation of my ownership.

My TV200 - bought in bits for an exorbitant 300 queenheads in 1994.

And finally my LI150/TV200 bitsa - bought in 1989 for 300 notes ( my hat was properly nailed on!)

Love the 1966 Reading registration on the TV. Was the SX first registered in Britain?

All 3 are UK originals with 6 digit plates. SX and LI registered in Manchester area, TV is indeed from Reading. :D

I don't have any pictures of the SX from when I first bought it, but "Dulux" was the theme. It looked pretty reasonable but I ended up scrapping the legshields and front mudguard as the tin worm had eaten away at them. It was registered in September 1967 but strangely has a very late frame number of 8489**. Perhaps the frame was replaced at some point?
It came with all the features of an early SX such as panel handles, shield horncast badge, bolt in fork buffers etc. But for some reason I chose to dress it as a late one with parts I had in my stash. ( had loads of stuff lying around in the "pre-parts fair" years!)
Another thing I did to ruin it was to have the engine built into a Stage 6 reed valved DJ200, with porting by Mr. Webster himself around 1992/3. It was built by a bloke I knew back then who raced with the LLRT by the name of Dave Gibson. It was a lot of money - much more than a TS1 would have been, but I was sold on the tried and tested old style tuning by Dave.
I apologise to the purists for all this, but at the time I had many scooters, and I was younger and stupider back then!

* EDIT - found a pic of it a couple of years after it was bought. It had been stripped down but then pieced together to take up less space!

Here are a few pictures of its first incarnation - pictures of pictures as I have no scanner I'm afraid, but you get the idea!

It stayed this way until 2011 when a complete rebuild was done 8-)

By 2010 it was looking a little tired, and the engine was getting rough. I'd seized it a couple of times on the way to IOW and it was getting hard to start. The cylinder was rebored, and a new piston fitted, the gearbox was worn, so was replaced. The clutch, chain and all bearings and seals were replaced and the 34mil PJ was refurbished. Next up, the timing was altered a little to compensate for the petrol we have these days (most likely cause of seizures on the motorway) so hopefully it won't happen again
The bodywork and Gubbins went to Zoot Scoot in Warrington - and I got it all back exactly a year later

It slowly went back together - I had bad arthritis at the time so it didn't happen quite as swiftly as in the past! It took a couple of weeks of evenings, a couple of hours at a time - seemed like an age.

My TV200 came from a bloke who bought all the stuff from Deeside Scooters when it closed. His garden and garage were stuffed with new and mainly used lambretta tat. Stacks of bodywork, engines, headsets, wheels, hubs etc. There were a few partially stripped scooters - one of which was this one, any parts missing off it were taken from the huge haul of spares. A lot of the missing body parts were found in the stacks of spares - identified by matching paint, a new old stock fibreglass mudguard was included and the original logbook was located too. Previous owners were from Oxfordshire/Berkshire/Hampshire and the logbook was amended to read " Racing 220cc" . This explains the stick-on numbers on the side panels.

The frame number is higher than that which is generally acknowledged to be the last one - its certainly among the last made.
