Imola 186 v RT195

Postby Meds » Wed Jun 17, 2015 8:54 pm

I'm looking at upgrading my small, block to either an Imola or RT195 kit and hoping to get some advice to help decide which one to get.
I don't want to make any irreversible mods to the engine/frame/ panels and I intend to build the engine myself.
So far the RT kit seems very flexible if I use a 60mm/110 crank . the Imola has a reed but doesn't seem to be as flexible.
Any advice from people who have them would be good.
The Imola set up I was looking at PHBH 28 + PM exhaust.

They are 2 totally different kits the imola known for being a revy peaky type kit and the rt more of a torquey tourer. I have the imola with 30phbh li150 gearing and fran race pipe. I now run it with a 60/110 crank and by altering the port timings with base/head packers it is now much torquier low to mid range but still has a belting kick when you wind it up. Never rode the rt so cant comment on this.

Cheers for the replies.
Why the Imola, the Imola and the RT kit are coming in at the same sort of price (SIP and MB prices)
I've had feed back that the size of the ports on the Imola kit don't leave much mating face on the casings after porting, anyone else had this problem?

My imola is the latest version (not the super imola) and matched the trannys on my indian casing (GP) and there was no concern over amount of gasket face . Think the early versions of the kit had too large transfers and these caused problems on some cases with sealing.

Surely you should be choosing a kit on it's attributes rather than it's price, certainly in the 1st instance, then maybe when you've whittled it down to a couple then maybe price would be the deciding factor?

As others have said the Imola and RT and completely different kits, Imola is more of a race kit, very revvy, whilst the RT is a touring kit. If looking for a touring kit then I'd be looking at either the GT186 or the Mugello 186/198? In fact that's exactly what I'm doing now and will most likely go down the GT186 route.

In order of state of tune you can go from Casa 186, Mugello, RT, GT, Imola, Casa SS, RB20. All top quality kits and they'll all do what it says on their tins. No such thing as a bad kit these days [discounting the Ebay Indian kits]. Choose the kit that suits your riding style, they're all in the £350 - £500 ish price range.
Don't choose by bhp numbers either .. Casa 186 doesn't fair too well on a dyno but it's a beautiful kit to ride.

Run an Imola on Spanish casings, jl3 28 mm Dellorto. No problem. Very race oriented bit of a chore to ride in town but great fun on dual carriageway. Before I ran a Mugello lots of tourque. Depends what you want from your kit. Race then Imola would be my recommendation, town and touring then a Mugello. Not had either of the other kits so can't comment on them.

Thanks for all the advice and after much deliberation I decided on an RT kit.
