Iron barrel or nicasil lined ali barrel?

Need help with a tuning kit, how do you tune your scooter, which kit should I choose, and all general tuning and modifcations questions are for in here.

I personally have been running TS1's since 1987, always with nicasil and love them. I've never had a linered cylinder as nobody has ever done me one, and that's probably the only reason. I am going to be building my Italian gp 150 0ver the coming winter with a large block motor. Now firstly I was going to do a TS1 again, but no matter how much I thought about and the possibility of different specialised set ups, it seemed silly having two bikes with the same kit at the end of the day. I thought of possibly having a piston port job, say Rapido or Mugello, but as I am also finishing off a stage 4 jet 200 ,decided against this. The Avanti seemed another option until I began following the saga of the GT 200 Big block. I have now chosen to get one at the end of the year and have a cast barrel as a second rally bike. I hope I am choosing wisely on what I've seen and read. Only time will tell. Another question is, regards Ali barrels, how do folk rate Ceramic plated Ali barrels?cheers,Speedy. :D

Having run a nicasil lined TS1 for 6 or 7 years with no issues, I am now facing getting it replated for the second time in a year. The cost is getting to me.

Whilst this is a pretty old thread, it has more or less convinced me to go steel liner. Anyone got an views or experiences that haven’t been mentioned above?

Also, what pistons are people using on steel liners please?

If the original plating lasted at least 6 years,since that you've had it replated twice in a year,there's deffinitely something wrong,either with the plating or the place that you had it plated.

No, the plating was fine. Just user error.

I’m using one of Scotty’s Iron lined TS1 cylinder and whilst I am still running it in I am very impressed. It’s combined with a CST3, a 30 PHBH and a 60 stroke crank. If you do get it done (I think you should) then get Darren to do it for you. He uses a Wossner piston and puts his tune on it. I went for a touring tune. I’m using 4.45 gearing and it’s really torquey. It’s the performance of a TS1 with the advantage of cast as far as I am concerned. It’s also running very cool compared to the TS1 I swapped it for ( which is still good but is sat on the shelf) to the point that I tested my SIP sensor in boiling water last night as I thought it was faulty. It isn’t.

Scotty did mine with a mitaka piston from ron moss. I bought the piston port type as scotty wanted to modify himself rather than get one with windows already cut.

Thanks for that. I live near a Mitaka supplier so I should be able to get hold of the pistons quite cheaply.

Do you run your TS1 without an air filter?

Sorry, I never replied. No, I have always used a filter through the panel.

I am going down the Scotty touring tuned and iron lined barrel with a Wossner piston, on Scotty’s recommendation.

Running in is a ballache Ann I don't have the discaplin.
Nicasil every time
40 miles and then just ride it, first set of rings are sacrificial change at 800- 1000 miles
Iron a 1000 miles softley softley on iron no ta
Ok you save a couple of quid if it goes wrong but how much do you value a 1000 miles of boredom.
Just done rough maths and that's 150 quid of fuel and oil and
25 hours at least of your time sat on the thing.

Running for 1000 miles? Nope.

Boring- not at all. You just don’t hold it wide open for prolong periods and don’t labour it up hill or into the wind and don’t engine brake. Taking it easy for the first Few hundred miles and then just gradually increasing speed. Hardly boring.

I’ve had lots of Nicasil and ceramic plated engines mainly enduro and supermoto bike and yes, they are thrashed from day one after 2 or 3 heat cycles on the paddock stand but then they’ll usually be apart again after 20 hour race use. A Nicasil barrel should be run in for a good 200 to 300 Miles in my view. Ron Moss has a strict running in regime doesn’t he?

Yes Ron does, its my choice and risk to follow it or not.
re race enduro and super moto, they're a different beast, crank life well sub 100 hours pistons half that oil change on my road enduro 5hrs if raced every race these are for 4 strokes btw, its like comparing an F1 car to a tractor.
out of interest did the nicasil ever wear out on your race bikes or was it other component failure.

He does but he told me that was mainly to look after the bridge on the exhaust. He also mandates a 2 minute warming up period when starting from cold.

Kidding, of course I listened but once I knew my Avanti TT3s (1 piston port, 1 crankcase reed) were set up correctly and bedded in they have always been used like any other nikasil kit; well and truly thrashed! These have taken me to a number of Euros, nationals, etc. and plating wear has never been an issue.

Great bit of kit.

one thing over looked when re-boring an iron barrel or any barrel, is it will ever so slightly alter the port heights, as the ports don't enter the barrel perpendicular. this is best seen when comparing a ts1 200 to a ts1 225 which is just an over bored 200 barrel.
if you re-plate to the original bore you keep what the engine designer or tuner intended.
