To name two.

Geoff at Zoot scoot is a good painter, but sadly I think he's called it a day.

Many thanks for the suggestions. Its a shame if Geoff has called it a day - I've not paid him a visit for a couple of years. :(

Finished stripping the outside of the mudguard earlier. It's pretty unpleasant in my unit when the weather is nice, but it looks like the warm and dryness is set to continue a while yet. I'll most likely sand blast the inside of the mudguard at work so I can hit it with POR15, but for the moment I want to get it good and straight first.

The off side is pretty much spot on

The near side is sporting some piss poor panel beating

post-18211-0-64880400-1528221647.jpg

I was aware of the dentage, but had hoped that whoever my old fella got to paint it back in '93 had done a better job! Not to worry though - this and the nearside rear floor board will be getting a bit of hammer/dolly action at some point.

I got a bit more done this afternoon - the heat in my unit was unpleasant, but no-one else offered to do it!
Alloy parts are being stripped by hand, the steel bits will be getting media blasted at sone point. Nitromors was used to soften the paint on the horn casing - here you can see the colour it was painted in 1990.

After a goodly amount of scraping and sand papering it.

The same process was employed on the horn grill - proper fiddly!

And the tail light housing - pretty fiddly!

The top and bottom handlebar castings will also need doing, but they're at a friend's place having the headlight rim threads welded up and repaired. ;)

Far too hot in my unit the last few weeks - the metal cladding radiates the heat of the sun inside. It's regularly over 40 degrees in there!

Fortunately, the good weather means that I can enjoy the ones that aren't in bits. :D

Many thanks!

This hasn't been forgotten about - it just took a long time to get my handle bars back after the headlight rim threads were welded up! This afternoon I got the holes drilled and tapped, then ground down the excess aluminium weld. I can finally get it all prepared for paint now. :)

Stripped all the paint off to check for cracks, then checked that it still fitted together nicely

The white paint was an absolute knacker to remove - who'd have thought that Halfords bodge tins would be so durable!

For all my Ali bits, I use a local wheel renovator who dips them. This removes all paint without any damage. Only charges me £10 per dip.

That's a mighty fine idea! Sadly my local alloy wheel bloke wasn't interested. :(

A bit more stripping today

It was just as much of a PITA as it was when I last did it twentysomething years ago! :)

Due to the tedium of scraping paint off aluminium hubs, I decided to try a different way with the rear one. I went out and bought a gallon of thinners, then plonked the hub in it to soak for a few hours. Pleasingly, the vast majority of the paint just rubbed off with a cloth. A few stubborn fragments still remain, but rub off reasonably easily with a red Scotch pad. :)

Been struggling to find time to spend on this, but did get a little more done today. Gearchange and throttle support were stripped of all paint.

post-18211-0-47237100-1548870949.jpg

The back of the horn casing was also relieved of its paint.

Now all the aluminium parts have been stripped, I can hopefully get it all off to a painter in the next week or so. :)

Bits and pieces dropped off at Fast Eddy's place this morning - colours chosen, and ball rolling again. 8-)

No probs - I picked a metallic blue (a bit darker than the colour it was back in the day) with white bits. :)
It looks good in my mind's eye, only time will tell!

This GP toolbox wasn't in the best condition when I fitted it to my bitsa back in 1990, it had numerous scuffs and scratches - this was why I painted it. This time I thought I'd have a go at restoring it. So far the paint has been removed with a soak in thinners, and I've started to eradicate the sanding marks and scuffs with wet and dry paper. I intend to go through the grades of paper until I can polish it up to a semi gloss finish.

If it all goes horribly wrong, I can always paint it again! :P
