SIP Speedo Box Noise

Postby rossclark » Thu Jul 12, 2018 9:43 pm

While strobing up my GP today I had cause to be kneeling down near the tank/toolbox area where I have th SIP Speedo control box mounted.

After turning the engin off I could here a sound, faint but a bit like a sort of warbling squeaking like gas escaping from a not quite tightened lid on a bottle of fizzy juice, if you can imagine. It's coming from the control box and when Inflick the battery isolator switch it stops - anyone else ever observed anything like this?

Mine is also in the engine compartment but is quiet with or with the ignition on.

I've never had cause to break open one of these SIp speedo regulators so I am guessing a bit here.
The sound you describe is reminiscent of the noise you can get when an electrolytic capacitor breaks down due to age or too high an input voltage, which is also a fire hazard.

I guess I'll disconnect it just in case for now.

I previously had the brown tacho sensor wire spliced from the yellow from my AF stator. The replacement engine has an Electrexworld kit so I simply spliced it in the same way - maybe this has a higher voltage outfit and has popped something. The revcounter certainly didn't work wired like that.

The noise is there with the engine running or not

Do you have a battery fitted?

Yes a battery is fitted and the noise stops when the isolator switch is flipped.

In hindsight I think I've probably cooked something in the box when I connected the sensor wire to the output from the stator directly. It's likely the power output of the generator is higher on the Electrex kit.

Yep. you've fried the box due to to high an input voltage.
£30 to replace it.
I use an optocoupler in this circuit to overcome this problem and i've even blown those out before but they are only 50p.

I'll google that before I cook another one, thanks.
