Full DC on an Electrex ignition?

Postby vegansydney » Wed Mar 11, 2020 2:06 pm

I recently acquired a cheap Electrex ignition and would like convert it to 'full DC'. From my research it appears this can be done, but there also appears to be different versions of this ignition. Mine is the one with the common Ducati-type CDI as found on V#sp@ P-series, and the wiring off stator is 2x white, 1x yellow, 1x green and 1x red.

I'd welcome any advice on converting this to 'full DC' using a Wassel/Podtronics type rectifier-regulator. Any wiring diagrams would also be much appreciated. Thanks!

Update: I stripped the sheaving off the wires and found a second yellow that had been cut short. The wiring diagram below now makes sense. I've read that others have been successful in converting these to 'full DC' by connecting the 2 yellows to a single-phase wassell/podtronics rectifier. Can anyone confirm this will work? Thanks!

That diagram is for a standard electronic stator, I resisted responding earlier as I understand that Electrex did a single and a 3 phase version of their stator which would need matching regulators. If yours just has 2 yellows (as well as the ignition wires) then I'd say that yes, a wassel single phase DC regulator will work. The yellows connect to the Wassel input (usually 2 yellows) and the black output from the Wassel goes to earth and the red connects to the lighting feed (brown) in the loom. If fitting a battery, an additional red has to be run from the red to the battery. That will get things working but DC horn needed and you might want to think about islolating the battery when away from your scoot to prevent battery drainage. Bike batteries are far better than alarm type batteried btw.

Thank you! Appreciate it.

The above wiring diagram was pulled from this thread, and apparently it is a Brolam wiring diagram for the Electrex. Mine has the same set up 2x white (one of which is an earth), 2x yellow, 1x green and 1x red. I've done several 'full DC' conversions, just never with an Electrex. Once I get the engine in frame I'll report back. Thanks again.

I have the same one but could not get it to run properly with a Ducati CDI - which was already on the bike. I put on the one that came with the kit and it was fine.

I also simply connected it to a Wassell and that seems to be OK.

Interesting it didn't like the Ducati CDI. My Electrex is second hand and the CDI I received with it was an Indian-made Mitsubi. I planned to swap it out for a genuine Ducati or BGM one. Was the CDI you received with the kit an unbranded one in a black housing that looks near identical to a Ducati one?

Fantastic to know it works with the Wassell! How did you wire it up? Yellows to yellows? I've done several, but none with an Electrex, so appreciate any advice. Thank you!

anything will work with a wassel as long as it has an output from the stator which is isolated from earth.

Correct there are no 'brand' markings on the CDI at all.

Originally the Ducati CDI, had been on my GP since the late 80s along with the AF light flywheel / stator.

When I changed the engine for the one with the Electrex it started and ticked over but would not rev out - once you started to open the throttle it stuttered and when strobed the timing was OK tickover but apply the throttle and it was all over the place.

All I did was swap that for the supplied CDI I and it was rock solid - there is video on my FB somewhere - I'll see if I can upload to YT and link to it.
