I am building a series 3 motor on the bench and am checking to see if my electronic Indian stator is working OK.
When I connect up using a 5 pin regulator and electronic coil and battery I get a good spark so am happy it will fire OK.
When I put my meter across the terminals of my battery I get 12.7 volts DC. The yellow wire connected to the regulator provides the charge from the stator.
When I rotate the crank using an electric drill the meter fluctuates wildly up to 19 volts. Surely this voltage is too high for a battery to cope with as I would expect a charge of around 13 volts. Can any of you sparkies out there tell me why this is so high please? I have tested the coils in the stator and changed both the stator and regulator but still I get the same result.

When you say 19v, where are you measuring? At the battery terminals? If so, yes, that's way too high, 15v is about as much as you'd want.
If it's coming from a regulator on a supply that should be used for a 12v battery, your regulator isn't doing its job. Ths stator can put out very high voltages, maybe 70v ac, which is then rectified and regulated to about 14v for your battery supply.

I always fit an in line fuse on the battery feed as a fuse is cheaper to replace than a battery

Ok so I have tried 3 other regulators and they all show 19 volts across the battery. Can anybody suggest a regulator that will charge the battery at around 14/15 volts? Surely my set up is a standard set up so can’t understand why this is happening.

I think I have now solved my dilemma. Instead of my test meter I fitted a 12v voltmeter and repeated the test. The voltmeter indicated 12.5 volts stationary and when I spun it up to speed it indicated 12.75 volts. I think the test meter was recording every individual pulse of voltage whereas the voltmeter was able to smooth out and take an average/mean value. Just goes to show that a test meter is not always correct.
