Hi there, just wondering if anyone could point me to any photo diagrams to show what each coil is on a 6 pole points type stator plate ? One of the coils looks damaged so wondered how to test too. Thanks in advance.

Despite the prevalence of virtually most Lambrettas now converted to electronic ignition, a properly serviced OEM ignition is likely to contain superior components, despite the age. Definitely more reliable than many Indian set ups. You only have to read Forums like this to see that.....

Mechanically, removal of any coil involves desoldering the relevant connections, easing over the laminates retaining the coils using a metal spatula (no point in damaging them!) & easing off.

Inspection of everything & thorough cleaning then replacement of any affected coils/re-wiring will result in a fully functioning stator.

There are probably guides but I can't be arsed to look right now. Either on here, Scooterotica or SLUK & you should really consider changing to 12 v points ignition. Even I have managed to do so with components from 50+ year old parts that looked brand spanking new once cleaned up! Unlike the Indian stators that arrive 'pre-distressed' (Am I getting my point across ? :lol: )

Despite his thriving business selling reliable electronic ignitions, I seem to recall Anthony Tambs will have done guides for those of us that cling to the reliability of OEM ignitions.

If you look at the stator, the first coil just above the black pickup is the LT coil for the ignition, then going counter clockwise you have the 4 lighting coils which are connected together in series.

As for points over electronic, a properly set up points system is fine but the problem is that they wear and as they do so you timming gradually retards ans you lose performance. Great if you enjoy regulat maintenance, it can be quite rewarding but personally I prefer a well prepared electronic system ;)

The Post concerns contact breaker ignition.

Actually, the degradation of properly set up points is virtually negligible, despite all of the negative thoughts about them. The problem is that confusion exists as to why OEM points ignitions can be unreliable. It was never due to inherent design problems, otherwise the boom years would not have seen thousands of scooters so equipped sell. Problems came about either through neglect, or most likely, the U.K. owner's tendency to bodge the job. Ask yourself how many times you've seen flywheels with broken fins or damaged flywheel tapers & that should confirm what I say.

My decision to continue their use on my own personal road going Lambrettas is fundamentally the reliability compared to the other options available & the likelihood of a roadside fix being a far greater possibility. My choice of flywheel is the lighter J range which suits the S III engine really well, especially if it has been only moderately tuned, offering the benefits of snappier acceleration, less inertia for quicker gear changes & less load on the bottom end.

Just in case you think me a complete Dinosaur, I have used electronic ignitions for many years, commencing with Motoplats in the 80's (with about 10 degree retard after an initial rapid advance @ low revs) to Selettra ignitions with a programmed curve.

Anthony Tambs has posted a YouTube video on the six pole stator and how to replace the coils and pick-up.

I think it is on his “Scootronics” channel on YouTube. Well worth a watch
