Trying to start my scoot and having kicked it over a few times I heard something go bang and it now does not return to the original position and stops about 20 mm from the stop on the casing....can anybody please throw any light on this

When mine did that I had cracked the kickstart shaft, and it had twisted. But it might be the kickshaft return spring gone? Does it engage when you try and kick it over?

Back home on Wednesday will try it again then....pretty certain it does just doesn’t go back to where it should...is the spring a big job to do?

Not especially - but you;ll need to take off the rear runner / exhaust / side casing to investigate.
If you dont have a copy of Stickys manual, then it may be wise to get one - whether you intend to do the work or not. It will at least give you some understanding of your scooter. Its the best £25 you'll spend.
