Hi Guys - got a GP kickstart set up, no separate ramp on the casing. I have too much travel on the kickstart before it engages with 1st gear, it will start and been like this for ages. I changed the kickspart piston out thinking it might be worn but just the same. I then moved the kickstart round 1 spline on the start, getting a full kick & rotation but the piston is just catching 1st gear. What are my options without major surgery? I'm thinking

- move kickstart round 1 spline & see if a thinner kick start rubber stop gives enough clearance?
- move the kickstart round 1 spline & let the natural wear happen?
- keep on original spline and continue with 1/2 kick?

As I said I don't want to use any structural changes or upgrades if I don't have to?

As the ultimate fix takes a lot more time & patience in changing to a 'case mounted ramp*, or modifying the existing ramp, then remove the rebound rubber bung completely. If that solves the problem, then by how much?

You should be able to ascertain how much of the rubber can go back in. Cut it down in stages until you get it just right.

Another alternative is to modify the stop on the kickstart itself (or try another as they vary)

Bend it down or cut it & add a packer. If it is bent down a tad it will normally solve the issue ;)


* The internal kickstart screw in peg can also be modified rather than the ramp itself. Go steady, but if a flat is made where it rides the sloped part of the ramp, it can make all the difference.

Great stuff -- maybe a blend of a couple will do the trick, the rubber stop and a slight bend on the kickstart stop -- thanks for the ideas, G

Mark Broadhurst makes a kickstart that has a steeped lug that you can adjust so it gives you more options.
I have one fitted to my GP and really impressed with the quality of it.

sometimes..... just fitting a new kickstart piston peg to replace a worn one can also make the necessary difference as can making sure that the kickstart shaft and bushes are a good tight fit.

Managed to get it, blend of cutting rubber stop, slight bend on the kickstart stop and a good file down of the kickstart stop. A cork gasket might be the next add on next time I'm in there but will check out the MB option to add another 0.4mm of clearance, that sounds the ticket. Just makes the difference between 2-3 Good kicks or many half kicks that turn nothing. Thanks all, G
