Circlip pliers

Every time I use circlip pliers I struggle, hating them, promising myself a new and better set.

The problem is a decent set is approaching £100
I then convince myself I don’t use them enough to warrant spending the money

This cycle has been repeating itself for years and years

Am I the only one..

Anyone got a recommendation to convince me to end this torture?

I am still using the Lang ones referred to in the thread below. I’d give them 6/10 whereas all the other ones I have used over the years have never got above about 3/10.

I had the same problem with the damn things. I bought an expensive set and no better. I think I have about 4 or 5 different sets now and none appear any better then the other. A poor workman blames his tools keeps ringing in my ears when removing circlips lol

I have a set with three different actual plier ends which can be removed & reversed to suit internal/external etc. OK for light ish stuff and served me well for many years..

Looks like I have a pair of 35 year old lang circlip pliers re-branded as RS components
Think I'll buy some replacement tips in an attempt to reduce my frustrations

How many times have we been on our hands and knees in the shed looking for that circlip that has pinged off, especially the little one on the gear control arm

i have a set of lang circlip pliers,pain changing those tips tho.
i also have decent pairs bought from auto jumbles.

I have at least 4 pairs, one larger for mag side, 3 for piston and other smallies. The larger ones are fine but the smaller ones tend to wear / round off and so become rubbish!

I bought some Laser ones from Halfords / Ebay - 4 differet sets - internal / external / angled / straight. They were about £10 for each one

They are ok - but as others have said above - I've found the tips to be a tad too big and therefore difficult for the smaller circlips. they work really well on the disc brake / mag housing circlips

Having bitten the bullet once - I'm resigned to struggling as I'm not investing again

I couldn't bring myself to buy new tips for my ageing universal do it all pliers

Instead I've bought some Knipex pliers specific to the size of the disc brake actuator circlip
Not too bad @ £20

I only hope they live up to expectation

I've had a pair of these for years and they've never failed.

You can buy replacement tips too.

Not as convenient to swap tips like those commonly available ones, but much sturdier and nicer to use.
