Any help please.

Series 1 Lambretta.
I came to go for a tootle today to find my rear wheel loose upon checking things before my ride. I have jacked scooter up and removed rear hub for checks and nothing standing out as such so cleaned inside the hub of brake dust etc and put it all back together. I checked the bearing and the thin washer and replaced the thin washer as I had some spares. I tightened the hub to specific torque and still it is loose, a bit better than it was but oose enough for me to say I am not going for my tootle today.

Any help please would be welcome in regard as to maybe I am missing something with my checks?

It is most likely that your gearbox endplate fixings have come loose possibly wrecking the casing dowel points in the process.
Less likely is that the rear wheel bearing has collapsed, although this can happen.
I suggest that you pull the gearbox apart for a thorough check.

Besides the excellent advice already given, I wonder if you checked the cone’s fit in the hub when you checked with the hub off?

I have known these early hubs - often selected for later, more powerful machines due to their thickness to obviate the collapse ‘inward’ - appear to be good, but where the cone should fit snugly, they will be baggy. The surrounding alloy of the hub doesn’t always have any tell-tale cracks which would be the giveaway sign.

Besides the odd f*ckwit fitting mis-matched hubs & cones, the other issue I have had with hubs is extremely premature wear of the cone on the layshaft splines, especially the remade/replacement cones for the Serveta hubs purchased from Scooter Restorations. In those instances, the material hardness is insufficient & the bore of the cones gain grooves from the splines.

Thanks for the replies and help in regard.
On a more thorough inspection it seems the hub itself is damaged .
The splines have deformed and was not seating right on the layshaft.
So a new hub is needed so now my next question to everyone is what make would be best choice?
I have heard good things of the scootopia hub being based on the series two and are of thicker material and bigger fins!
Has anybody had the scootopia one and if so how is it?
There is also the uni ones too so again does anybody rate those too.

I have used many Uni ones since they first came out a decade, or more, ago. I’d give them an 8 or 9 out of ten. I wouldn’t say they are all precisely round on the inner track but they are pretty sturdy with ok hub studs, cones and splines. :)

I haven’t tried a Scootopia one but definitely avoid Indian Ramp made ones. I wouldn’t use an FA Italia one either but that is from personal experience many years ago now.
