mec eur rear hub

Postby Fireman Ash » Tue Apr 14, 2015 7:10 pm

Hi all.
Been offered the above rear hub as a replacement part.
I have read the threads but can't find members views on this make.
Some hubs are slated e.g sand cast, unknown material content, even heard some negative comments regarding Scootopia most recent offering from China.
Confusing for the consumer, shame there isn't control or QA for such an important scooter part.

Also can engine mounts/silent blocks be fitted by only dropping the engine and be removed/fitted with the tool cold (no heat)
Cheers all

Hi Ash. Not sure about the rear hub but all the advice I have ever had regarding changing engine mounts is that you need to use the correct tool AND heat, lots of heat.

Thanks Tony, true or not an ex mechanic for a former collector said that heat should not be used as changing them was always designed to be a compression fitting and without heat, my thoughts were that if it was cold and you got it wrong you could damage the casing driving it in..ooh err that would rule out cold fitting in situ otherwise I may need the fire brigade I work for lol :? :)

I did mine without heat and it was no problem with the right tool.

However, next time I will use heat as I can't see why it would be a problem. The temperatures involved aren't going to affect the grain structure.

So heating the casing at the rate that the current mounts last ( or don't) wouldn't affect the tight fit?
Just nervous doing it cold incase I do irreparable casing damage.
Back in the day was heat generally used or advised by Innocenti?

How long are your mounts lasting Ash? I have just bought some new ones (not fitted yet as that is a job for after C2C) and was hoping they last at least a couple of years.

First set of solid Casa one's separated from mount casing and most recent SIL ones on GP have gone, both kickstart side only, probably in last 4 years but not loads of miles. My SIL ones on Serveta have been ok and still look good. May go for the Scootopia one's from my mate who owns Torbay Lambretta for my gp

Cheers Ash. Bought some SIL ones from Scooter Restorations and am hoping to get a decent return out of them. Current ones have 8 000 miles on them and can probably do a bit more.

Did mine a few months back.
To remove the originals from 1964 I warmed the lugs using a hot air gun to a level where I could just touch them, so about 60 deg C. fitted the correct tool and they drew out easy.

Refitted new Scoot Rest mounts (3 holes) in the same way but cleaned the bores in the casting with scouring pad to remove obvious corrosion.
Filed a small chamfer on the edge of the new mounts as they were too sharp, a smear of general grease and warmed as before. The new one went in easier and easy to control the orientation of the holes too.

I think the extra effort required without heat would have been minimal.

I doubt Lambretta did all this in production, a press would be used on cold castings, production times too important (££££)

As ever, I had to 'adjust' the tool parts to completely clear the casting ribs so the tool would draw the mount in straight ( )

I've just fitted the bgm ones..the kickstart side was a bitch with heat/without heat, mount in freezer etc.couldnt get it in more than half way. Then took a bit of emry to the inside of the lug aand it flew in..amazing how tight that compression fit is and how something so minor could cock things up..you live and learn..

They are pricey compared to all others out there but seem a great bit of kit..time will tell
