Well fed up.....my Std GP200 Italian on points is Smoking like a goodun ...not the easiest to start ....plenty of compression in fact too much ...it was restored prob 8 to ten years ago ...by the best ...it's been in the naughty corner for a long time now ..I ran it in for a 1000 miles on ordinary oil not synthetic ...I tried putting a cloth over the exhaust whilst running and it virtually conked out ...when I got it started it runs Ok ish but when I put the sidelights on it conks out ...only done just over a 1000 miles since full Resto ......any clues Boys ....I drained petrol in tank and emptied carb ....and put new fuel in thinking stale fuel was the problem ..HELP...

Sounds like it could be burning off the unburnt fuel that is in the exhaust, residue from previous.
Engine cutting out.... what ignition? If on original points ignition then it is common for this to happen when magnetism drops on the flywheel. Regardless of ignition type, close up the plug gap a little and try again, which normally cures the cutting out on points models.
Adam
Edit - Just read that it is still on points so close up the plug gap and try it again.
