Sheared hub studs

Felt a rear wobble on the A63 coming back from Cleethorpes. Thought i'd got a flat rear but all looked well when I managed a "controlled" stop (spooky at 60 mph). Further inspection showed all four of the wheel studs had sheared. I'm puzzled as to the cause ?

usually its because the rim has cut the through to a point where they snap.
freshly painted rims are a common cause and under tightened wheel nuts are also a cause.
some studs are made of cheese and can stress with over tightening.
worth replacing with studs from SR.
are the holes in your rims elongated this will give you a clue.
Looking again at your picture it looks like this may well be the case as they look like the are cut thru from the side that takes the acceleration forces.

a mate had three like that on the front going to Cleethorpes yesterday, and the last one had broken by the time he managed to stop, he sensibly didn't use the front brake to slow down, that would have sheared the last one whilst he was still moving.
He said that he had just gone through a couple of large potholes, then noticed that the front end wasn't right...

As Byron said, I lost three studs on the front hub when they all sheared. The last one was so loose the hub slipped through the wheel as the bike came to a stop. Two large pot hole I couldn't miss cause the problem (i think). I'm still not sure how it stayed in place as it went at about 50 mph. All i did was drop the throttle, pull in the clutch and let it coast to the side of the road. The final lug broke off when we were putting on the recovery truck. I've lost a few studs on the rear before but never on the front.
