As a last resort ,for an in situ fix I would use a self tapper -

A bodge I know but it will do until you retap of throw in an insert ;)

:o shocked mate!

you can usually use the M5 helicoil tap on there without drilling, or enlarge to M6
either way, make sure it's going in straight as not a lot of alloy around there to go astray...

I would have thought that the cowling would stay on with this particular bolt missing, or are your needs more asethetic than that?

Going to try opening the hole from the inside and JL metal one of these in.
Got loads of flanges that need these doing.

Sorry you can't visualise it. My apologies.

Effectively, a high tensile M5 socket countersunk screw is Loctited from the inside to create a stud. When the head cowling is offered up, it is much easier to get into place, then washers & nyloc nuts are fitted to retain the cowl.

Obviously, you cannot do this with the flywheel cover.

No. The holes allow the head cowling to lift off as per normal.

It's that you have a much stronger thread with the 'stud' not being screwed in & out wearing out the alloy.

The picture is just an ex-race mag housing, but you can make a better job of it by reducing the size of the head.
