What's the light output like Grandpa, useful or purely decoratively?

Colin[/quote]
Hi coaster,
Decorative. The centre 10 watt spot light are bright but not much of a beam. However, the 27 leds in each lamp are similar to day time running lights which means I use them instead of running on dipped during the day.I am a bit of a fraud as I don't ride in the dark or in the rain :? ( Did that in mid sixties going to work every day!)
Regards,
Grandpa
Ps if you read this and have electronic ignition experience can you comment on Kennystags post "anybody fitted this kit Wed 26 aug.".I am on wassell with points so have no experience of pickups and cdi.

Ok, thanks everyone.

On balance, I reckon I'm going to go for the lightweight battery and Modcharger solution for now and see how it works out..... I don't ride in the dark all the time so it may do for now. Looking at doing a whole new project soon and will factor the full DC into the equation when choosing the ignition rather than messing around with this one, I've just got it working right!

Just realised, you said you have a varitronic so YOU WON"t be needing a MOD charger, the Varitronic has a battery charging facility or sonI believe :?

Unless its changed a lot the varitronic only has a pin to trickle charge the battery same as the standard 5 pin ones

The Mod charger is just a trickle charger as well isn't it?

Maybe a lightweight battery and overnight Optimate sessions to begin with.... Do you mean the amount of charge added by the Varitronic or a Modcharger wouldn't be enough to make it worth adding.... ie it wouldn't be enough to keep it charged between uses?

I use a little gizmo from ScootRS that charges my battery. About £12. Works perfectly and keeps charge up for my brake light, air horns, spots and other little gadgets I have. Taps into output from 3 pin regulator.
I have since blown that regulator and fitted a 5 pin but left things as they were.
Not a lot of charge available when lights on though.

That depends on your type of ridding to some extant and the size (capacity) of battery you use. From completely flat to fully charged a trickle charger will take literally hours to fully recharge your battery and that would be with the lights off and revving at a decent rate i.e. not just ticking over or crawling in traffic. My advice would be to 'suck it and see', you WILL need to top it up from the mains from time to time but you might find that the balance is acceptable. I have also had to do that with both of my DC converted scoots when running with a 55/60 headlamp. With the HID which only draws 30 watts and a DC converted BGM stator it charges at 14.3 volts from 40 mph upwards and that's with the lights on 8-)

That's great, thanks for all your help.

Suck it and see it is for now I think, full DC from the start with the next build,

Cheers,

Hugh.

Modcharger gives you 12V at up to 1 Amp a boarding to their website, it won't run your pathfinder.
