rear brake problem

Hi All,
I fitted a new inner, and outer rear brake cables, with new adjuster to my GP. After correctly adjusting the cable, then pressing the pedal, it goes to the floor. The shoes are new, this has been going on now for about 6 or 7 times., anybody had the same problem.

Have you checked the threads on your Clamping Bolt on the pedal sometimes feels tight but cable is pulling through ?

That checked out ok. I tried the old outer cable, and I now have a brake, so I will leave as is, but thanks for your reply.

If your Brake shoes work in the hub by pushing the cam lever it sounds like your cable its not pulling through the stop is it in the frame ?

3 main problems contributing to the issue
Rear brake cable routed incorrectly (over carb manifold, outer not fitting properly )
Very hard Italian shoes. Softer compound shoes fitted
SIL casing pivots misaligned. Re-welded to provide correct pivot profile.

So I have a useable brake now.

The problem you had was on the GP200 engine, as there was is a manufacture defect.

the stop where the cable goes into, you should have one of these either end of the cable outer.



One sits in the frame under the legshields, the other in the engine casing where the cable goes through to the arm.

is the new outer longer than the old one..?
often they need trimming down slightly to get a nice route, otherwise all the pressure is doing is flexing the outer.
ideally the cable run should be as straight as possible, allowing for engine movement of course

Couple of things, you say its adjusted correctly but the peddle goes to the floor. That would indicate that you have too much slack in the cable. Put a spanner on the rear arm and turn it as far as you can by hand and hold the leaver in place with some cable ties, Fit your adjuster ensuring that it has enough clearance into the shocker support and still more depth for future adjustment. If not move the arm round a few splines. When your happy with the back end pull the other end through at the pedal. then snip your cable ties. I would recommend the one piece cable with the adjuster crimped on as sold by someone clever on here. Saves all the 1st part with the adjuster bottoming out before the brake works. Lot easier to drop your engine you remove the nut adjuster and pull it through with the top hat easy...

I had the cable adjusted correctly, but after a couple of pumps on the pedal it went to the floor. I used a cable tie to hold the arm in place, I even shimmed the shoes between the heal of the shoe and cam,that helps a lot as i have done in the past and works a treat . When I put the old outer cable back on it sorted out the problem, also I stretched the cable and that also helped when it was stretched enough to get better ajustment . I was thinking about getting the cable with the threaded rod at the end, less hassle makes life easier.

Get in touch if you need a inner brake cable with crimped-on adjuster. I've been making and selling these for years (more than 2000) and never had one fail or be returned to me. £10.50 delivered to LCGB members through this forum. Made in UK too.

My cables all come with fitting instructions, though the use of the cable tie is my best tip, and you seem to have already thought of that.

Thanks for the info. There was a slight difference in that the new cable was longer, I could not be bothered trimming it, I just stuck the old one back on. When I get the new threaded inner cable, I will use the new outer cable after trimming it.
