running in

Postby panda » Thu Jul 28, 2016 5:11 pm

hello folks.... I have just rebuilt my 150 engine after the main seal went after the iom rally and was wondering how many miles will I have to do to run it in again,I have replaced all the bearing and oil seals and a brand new chain and clutch but the top end just the same. ;)
cheers

There may be contradiction to this opinion (like ride it as if you stole it :!:) but the rules to which I’ve adhered on a road scooter are:

• Use the gears up & down so that you are varying the revs all the time. In other words, play tunes on your gearbox! For example, from fourth to third where the revs (& cooling) will increase but not the load
• Gradually increase the revs as mileage increases
• Don’t labour the engine (particularly as the cooling is relative to fan speed)
• Don’t be tempted to add more oil
• Don’t be tempted to roll off the throttle downhill or approaching a stop/junction etc
• Keep your left hand hovering over the clutch
• Let the engine run @ a higher tick-over after any run so that it can cool down, rather than switch off if it is hot

I hope this helps, but it is only my opinion & offered as a genuine response. ;)

I always understood that if you changed the rings it was good practice to give them a few miles to bed in properly. I don't know if you have or not, but it's probably still a good idea if you've had it apart.

If thats all you've changed,I wouldn't bother about having to run it in.Just take it easy for the first 100 miles to bed in the new bearings, clutch and chain.

Oops!

I took it for granted you'd refreshed the top end & needed to bed in rings to a fresh bore.

My mistake, but what I said may be useful reference for future/others..... :)

Hi Mark,
I was wondering why you said what you said, as the top end was not touched lol.
