Sat Nav charging (again)

Bit of electrical help needed, at the moment I am powering my Sat Nav on my AC wired Lammy via a mod charger, but it doesn`t seem to be able supply enough power to keep it charged under certain circumstances, I intend to fit a small battery(7AH) and run the sat nav from that, will the mod charger be ok to keep the battery charged, or will I need another way to charge it, and what would else would I need to wire it up. Not to sure on electrics, you either love em or hate em.

Yep, i hate electrics but its all doable.

I guess the problem you are having is that the modcharger will only be charging the satnav when the engines running and that varies with speed too?

Id certainly say that using a battery (think many on here say at least 4ah) it will stablise the current and keep it topped up better.

Many that use an alarm type battery will fit it somewhere handy and then remove it for charging indoors periodically as even using a battery can give problems. Of course if you put the scooter in a garage you could fit a motorcycle charger which is plug and play to keep it topped up.

Basically you need to ensure the satnav does not use more power up than it's being supplied with, thats possibly whats currently happening due to the variability of the power supply via the modcharger only?

for example, if the satnav uses XX amps and the modcharger only supplies X then you will inevitably run out of juice.
Similarly if you add a battery in the mix using XX and the battery supplies XX thats fine unless the battery is only getting X again, eventually you will again run out of juice.

The best way all in is to convert to the wassel full dc system with a battery and run the satnav off that, but it sounds a lot of work for just a satnav, it depends how much you really use / like it?

As above DC is the way but if you are going for a battery I would forget the mod charger as a way of recharging or topping it up. I have done several small BGM regulators and they work well. They are small enough to hide inside an original lammie regulator box so can look good. Easy to wire and you can use or simply not connect the battery feed. They also do a 6v version. So it's a strait swap for the normal Vespa 3 pin regulator running AC everything but a trickle charge to a DC battery. I would dump the bloody big yellow wires they come with and replace with normal spades on the original loom.
